Is It Safe To Consume Moringa Everyday?

The Moringa tree, with its nutrient-rich properties, has a long history of use in traditional medicine. Recently, there has been a notable increase in the popularity of Moringa as a dietary supplement.

People are incorporating Moringa leaves into their diets and consuming Moringa leaf powder, attributing benefits such as increased energy, improved digestion, and potential mood enhancement.

However, the question remains – is it safe to consume Moringa every day?

A question mark girl

Undoubtedly, Moringa stands out for its rich nutrient profile, encompassing vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Scientific studies have indicated its potential to enhance blood sugar control, reduce cholesterol levels, and combat inflammation. There’s also emerging evidence suggesting a positive impact on cognitive function and mental well-being.

While labeling something as “safe” can be challenging, extensive research has been conducted, including studies where humans were under doctor supervision while consuming Moringa for extended periods. For instance, one study explored the effects of Moringa Oleifera consumption on anxiety in humans over a week. Another study involved the application of Moringa Oleifera leaf extract through a topical cream on the face region for three months.

In virtually every human study exploring the impact of Moringa, researchers have utilized powdered Moringa leaves. The studies varied in their focus on different dosage levels. For instance, in one study, participants were administered a single dose of 50 grams [Source].

In another investigation, participants received a daily dosage of 8 grams consistently for 40 days [Source]. This pattern persists across various studies, with some given lower doses (typically ranging between 4 and 8 grams) over several weeks, while others opt for larger doses given in a single instance.

Remarkably, participants consistently reported no negative side effects. On the contrary, the observed effects were positive, including lowered cholesterol and blood sugar levels.

Wow sign

A number of other studies have explored the safety of prolonged Moringa use, primarily conducted on rats rather than humans. You can find a selection of these studies for review here.

Despite our personal experiences with Moringa for extended periods, if you’re considering the use of Moringa supplements, we advise you consult with your doctor first.

Are There Side Effects For Taking Moringa Everyday?

While Moringa is generally considered safe to consume, it is important to be aware of potential side effects:

  1. Moringa may lower blood sugar levels, so it is necessary for people with diabetes to monitor their  intake of Moringa supplements.
  2. Moringa can act as a blood thinner, making it advisable for those on blood thinners or with bleeding disorders to avoid its consumption.
  3. Pregnant women should refrain from taking Moringa as it may increase the risk of bleeding during childbirth.
  4. Moringa might interfere with the effectiveness of specific medications, encouraging individuals on medication to consult their doctor before using Moringa supplements.
  5. Some individuals may experience allergic reactions to Moringa, emphasizing the importance of testing a small amount before consuming larger quantities.
  6. Due to its high vitamin and mineral content, excessive consumption of Moringa may lead to issues like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Hence, consulting a doctor before taking large doses of Moringa is important.

How Much Moringa Is Safe To Take Everyday?

I’ll have to crunch the numbers; you can just follow along.

According to a 2009 study, Moringa aqueous leaf extract doses were considered safe at 2000 mg/kg [Source].

Now, an aqueous leaf extract won’t have an identical chemical profile to the leaf powder commonly used in human studies. Let’s dive into a thought experiment using this figure.

Starting with 2000 mg/kg, which is equivalent to 2 grams, for simplicity.

Let’s assume we’re considering a smaller individual weighing 54 kg (or just under 120 pounds). That person could theoretically consume 108 grams of Moringa without experiencing negative side effects.

An average size 0 capsule holds about half a gram of powder.

In other words, if you weigh 120 pounds, you could ingest 216 capsules of Moringa powder at once and still be okay.

Please note, even if you weigh 240 pounds and could theoretically consume 432 capsules without issues, it’s not advisable! Don’t attempt to eat 216 capsules of anything in a single sitting. It’s generally not a good idea.

Caution sign

As mentioned earlier, the aqueous leaf extract of Moringa will not have the same properties as fresh, dry, or powdered leaves.

It’s crucial to note that none of the studies mentioned involved force-feeding participants 216 Moringa powder capsules.

Furthermore, it’s always advisable to begin with a smaller dose.

The smallest dose found in a study was 4.6 grams. In a 2010 study on patients with Type-2 diabetes, conducted by Nambiar et al. [Source], the treatment group received a daily dose of 4.6 grams over a 50-day period. The patients reported a decrease in total plasma cholesterol and an increase in HDL, all without any adverse side effects.

The focus here is on the dose – 4.6 grams, equivalent to filling 9 capsules daily.

While this was the smallest dose found, other studies used doses of 7 grams (14 capsules), 8 grams (16 capsules), or even a one-time dose of 50 grams (a substantial 100 size 0 capsules).

For most individuals, taking 9 Moringa powder capsules a day may not be necessary.

The takeaway from every human research study on Moringa’s effects is that such doses are considered safe.

In conclusion: Avoid shoveling Moringa into your mouth by the bowlful, and you’ll be fine.

On a personal note, I take 3 grams a day, and the Moringa powder that I love and regularly use is Kuli Kuli Moringa Powder that you can find on Amazon.

Is It Safe To Eat Moringa Seeds Everyday?

Consuming Moringa seeds on a daily basis is considered safe and provides a rich source of nutrients, including high levels of protein, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Regular consumption of Moringa seeds can help with enhancing your immune system and promoting overall health.

However, it’s important to be careful, as Moringa seeds act as a natural laxative. When introducing them into your diet for the first time, be mindful, as excessive consumption may lead to unexpected and urgent bathroom trips.
