Scientific studies recommend that pregnant or breastfeeding mothers can safely consume 1 to 2 teaspoons of Moringa powder daily. However, it’s crucial for them to avoid Moringa root, bark, gum, and flowers during pregnancy due to the potential risk of uterine contractions associated with these parts of the plant.

Experts recommend using Moringa powder made from the tree’s leaves.

Is Moringa Safe During Pregnancy?

The culinary use of Moringa leaves has a rich history dating back to times beyond recorded records. Whether ground into powders or incorporated whole into meals, Moringa leaves have been integral to human diets, transcending from India and Africa to global popularity.

This versatile plant has served as a remedy for various ailments and has become a nutritional resource so potent that doctors and aid workers in numerous countries use it to treat malnourished children and nursing mothers.

For millions of people, including pregnant or nursing mothers, Moringa leaves have been a staple in their daily diet since ancient times. Current research strongly supports this dietary choice as beneficial.

Given that nutrient deficiencies pose significant risks, especially during pregnancy, where certain deficiencies are linked to birth defects, maintaining adequate vitamin and nutrient levels is crucial for overall health. Moringa leaves and powder are rich sources of essential vitamins, minerals, and nutrients, including folate/folic acid.

Moreover, Moringa contributes to warding off high blood pressure, a potential source of complications for both the mother and unborn child. Extensive research consistently supports the safety and positive effects of consuming Moringa leaves during pregnancy, with no studies concluding any negative or harmful side effects.

Moringa Safety Tips for Pregnancy: What to Avoid

The conflicting information surrounding the use of Moringa Oleifera during pregnancy arises from the potential dangers associated with some less commonly used parts of the “Miracle tree.”

While many consume Moringa leaf powder safely, experts advise pregnant individuals to avoid the root, bark, gum, and flowers. These less common parts of the plant contain alkaloids that can be harmful in incorrect doses.

Moringa root bark, for example, contains two alkaloids that may trigger uterine contractions. These chemicals increase the risk of complications, especially in early pregnancy. Traditionally, the flowers, roots, bark, and gum of Moringa have been used as abortifacients.

Although most people don’t consume the root or bark, it’s still important to avoid them during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Reputable retailers typically don’t sell these parts, and health professionals discourage their use due to the risks. To stay safe, stick with Moringa leaf or powder for a positive experience with the “Miracle tree.”

Moringa Seeds and Pods: Safe Dosage During Pregnancy?

Researchers haven’t yet confirmed whether pregnant individuals can safely consume Moringa drumsticks or seed oil. While people have traditionally used drumsticks in cooking, these parts don’t contain the same harmful alkaloids found in the root, bark, gum, or flowers.

However, caution is advised when considering the mature seeds, as they may contain higher concentrations of certain vitamins and minerals compared to the leaves. Taking too much of certain nutrients, like Vitamin A, can pose risks during pregnancy. As of now, there is insufficient research to make a clear recommendation regarding the consumption of Moringa drumsticks during pregnancy.

To stay on the safe side, experts advise avoiding Moringa seeds during pregnancy or breastfeeding. While the seeds offer benefits like Vitamin C and cardiovascular support, it’s best to weigh those against the potential risks. Always consult a healthcare provider for personalized guidance.

Can you Take Moringa Leaves While Breastfeeding?

Yes, it is safe to consume Moringa (drumstick tree) while breastfeeding. Many consider Moringa one of the best natural remedies for boosting milk production. Moringa leaves are rich in various nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and antioxidants. Additionally, they contain plant sterols, which can help lower cholesterol and increase estrogen levels.

The plant sterols in Moringa also help increase estrogen, which in turn increases the production of milk. In fact, the United Nations’ Food and Agricultural Organization recommend Moringa leaves and powder to both pregnant and nursing mothers:

Leaves are rich in protein, vitamins A, B and C, and minerals – highly recommended for pregnant and nursing mothers as well as young children.

Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations

Several studies suggest that Moringa’s nutrient-rich profile can double milk production by up to 100%. Most experts consider it safe with minimal to no negative effects. World health organizations also recommend Moringa to nursing mothers. Therefore, based on available data, using Moringa while breastfeeding is considered safe and beneficial.

Safe Moringa Dosage for Breastfeeding

Yes, Moringa is safe for breastfeeding. While it’s known to increase lactation and is considered beneficial for breastfeeding mothers, some individuals may experience excessive lactation to the point of constant leakage. If you find that Moringa is causing an overwhelming increase in lactation, leading to difficulties such as constant leakage, it is advisable to lower your daily dose of Moringa.

Adjusting the dosage based on individual reactions is a common practice, and it’s essential to find a balance that suits your needs. The goal is to maintain a healthy level of lactation without causing inconvenience or discomfort. If you are experiencing challenges with lactation after taking Moringa, reducing the daily intake may help address the issue.

Is Moringa Safe for Pregnancy?

Pregnant people and nursing mothers have historically used Moringa leaves, and existing research suggests that, in commonly used doses, Moringa leaves are generally considered safe. However, it is crucial to consult with your doctor before incorporating any supplement into your diet during pregnancy.

Everyone reacts differently to Moringa. A doctor can give advice based on your health. Before purchasing Moringa powder or any supplement, have a discussion with your doctor to ensure that there are no specific reasons for you to avoid or limit Moringa consumption during pregnancy. Taking this precautionary step ensures a safe and informed approach to incorporating Moringa into your diet.

Taking Moringa Postpartum

Many postpartum individuals face challenges related to weight gain and energy levels. Adding Moringa to your daily routine can boost both your energy levels and overall well-being.

One notable benefit is Moringa’s contribution to addressing iron deficiency, a common concern among new mothers. The rich nutritional content of Moringa makes it a favorable option for those seeking natural alternatives.

For mothers hesitant about traditional medicine, Moringa can be a potential choice worth considering. The positive experiences and reviews from individuals who have incorporated Moringa into their postpartum routine highlight its potential benefits.

The Recommended Starting Amount for Moringa

Nutrition facts are a familiar part of our daily lives, but when it comes to superfoods like Moringa, things get less clear. How Much Moringa should you take daily? Unlike packaged snacks with clear labels, Moringa lacks an official FDA-recommended daily value. This leaves many wondering about the right dosage for safe and effective use.

In this article, we will be answering this question in more detail.

How Much Moringa Should I Take Daily?

Even though the FDA hasn’t officially designated a daily value for Moringa, extensive research provides some guidance. We recommend that Moringa newcomers start with a daily intake of 500 mg to 1 gram. This amount can be gradually increased to a range of 5-15 grams over the course of a few months.

More information about Moringa and Moringa’s daily dosage is below.

If you wanted a quick deep-dive into Moringa’s nutritional facts, here’s a good article we wrote on it:

Moringa Nutrition Facts

How Much Moringa Do People Normally Use?

Over the course of thousands of years, humans have integrated Moringa into their diets, providing us with ample time to experiment with its usage. However, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer to the question of how much Moringa one person should consume. The ideal amount varies depending on the person, the specific recipe, and whether Moringa is being used in the form of leaves, powder, or drumsticks.

Recipes With Moringa Leaves

This 4-serving chutney recipe by Archana’s Kitchen, for example, uses two cups of Moringa leaves, or half a cup per person. This Dal recipe from Saffron’s Trail uses 1.5 cups for a 2-person dish or 3/4ths of a cup per person.

One cup of fresh Moringa leaves, according to the USDA, is about 21 grams. In other words, the Archana’s Kitchen recipe will give you about 10.5 grams of Moringa per serving. While, the Saffron’s Trail recipe will give you a little over 16 grams.

Recipes with Moringa Powder

Recipes calling for Moringa powder tend to use less. This delicious Moringa and mint chocolate squares recipe from Aduna calls for only 2 teaspoons (or about 9.5 grams) and makes 12 chocolate squares; less than a gram of Moringa per square. This gorgeous Moringa smoothie from Kind Earth only uses 1 teaspoon (4.75 grams).

Recipes with Drumsticks

Recipes that call for drumsticks tend to use more, on the other hand! This scrumptious 2-serving drumstick masala recipe from Sharmis Passions uses 5 drumsticks or about 27 grams per serving.

On the other hand, this potato and Moringa recipe from Indian Healthy Recipes uses 3 (about 33 grams), albeit only for 1 serving.

How much Moringa you use is going to depend a lot on whether you’re using fresh leaves, dried ones (though these are much less common in recipes; I tend to use them only in teas), powder, or drumsticks.

The powder is much more concentrated, so recipes tend to use a lot less. Drumsticks tend not to contain quite as much of the vitamins/minerals/nutrients as the leaves do (with a few exceptions; check the USDA database here for more information), so most recipes use more.

Too much of any vitamin or nutrient (even the really important ones, like calcium or Vitamin A) can actually have negative side effects, and Moringa has lots of vitamins and nutrients!

How Much Moringa is Too Much Moringa Per Day?

This question is a really fun one. It also requires a little bit of math. But I’ll do it for you; you can just follow along and check my work.

In 2009, researchers studying Moringa aqueous leaf extract found that doses were safe up to 2000 mg/kg (or, to simplify, up to 2 grams per kilogram). You can check out the research in more detail here.

Three years later, another study went further; they concluded that it wasn’t until a person started taking 3000 mg/kg before the dose would be dangerous.

Therefore, 3000 mg/kg (or 3 grams per kilogram) is too much, and 2000 mg/kg (2 grams per kilogram) shouldn’t have negative side effects. But what does that actually mean?

For the purposes of this experiment; we’ll use a small number. Let’s say we have an adult that weighs 50 kilograms, which is equivalent to about 110 pounds; in other words, someone on the smaller side.

A safe dose of 2 grams per kilogram means that a 110-pound adult could consume 100 grams of Moringa without suffering any negative side effects. A 200-pound adult could eat 180 grams.

Now, the average 0-sized capsule holds about half a gram of powder. In other words, if you weigh 50 kilograms or 110 pounds, you could eat 200 capsules of Moringa powder in a single sitting and be fine.

I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again: please do not eat 200 capsules of Moringa at a time. Don’t eat 200 capsules of anything at a time. Even if your capsules are teeny tiny, just don’t do it. I promise that you’re not going to enjoy yourself. But theoretically, you could.

You would need to eat a ridiculous amount of Moringa a day to eat too much. A small, 50-kilogram adult would need to eat more than 200 capsules.

You’d need to eat more than 5 cups of fresh leaves. More than 9 or 10 drumstick pods.

It’s absolutely possible to eat too much of any vitamin or mineral.

That’s the reason we have Tolerable Upper Intake Levels; to tell us how much Calcium, Vitamin A, and potassium is too much. But luckily for us, “too much Moringa” is a large amount; far more than we typically eat.

There are a few great brands that make organic Moringa capsules, one of which is by Pura Vida.

How Much Moringa Powder Per Day?

Remember, Moringa powder is very concentrated. Because of this, Moringa Powder Dosage is recommended at 5 to 10 grams a day, with a build-up period to getting to these numbers.

If you want to start slow, I suggest under 500mg. Then gradually increase over a couple of months to get into this range.

My personal favorite Moringa powder that I use to make Moringa tea is the Organic Moringa Powder by True Moringa. It’s 100% raw organic Moringa powder (made from Moringa leaves), and has no additives, preservatives or artificial colors.

I like to make Moringa tea every morning on an empty stomach. I pour one teaspoon of Moringa in boiling water, stir it well and add ginger and mint to give it more of a flavor and it tastes delicious!

So What Do Experts Recommend?

Because there’s not currently a standard recommended serving amount for Moringa, you’ll see recommended serving sizes vary a little. For the most part, though, they do remain pretty consistent.

Kuli Kuli, one of the largest distributors of Moringa within the United States, recommends a daily dose of 1tsp to 1 tbsp (2 grams to 14.3 grams) of Moringa powder.

Aduna, another huge distributor of superfoods like Moringa, recommends a daily serving of 10 grams (a little under 2 tbsp).

Carrie Waterman, a Ph.D., and researcher at UC Davis who’s been researching Moringa for 15 years, recommends a daily dose of 5-10 grams for a 150-pound adult. Most research studies on Moringa have given participants daily doses ranging from 4.6 to 8 grams. All of these doses are well within the range of safety, and most are pretty analogous to what you see in recipes.

Moringa Capsules Dosage Per Day

Since we know we should be taking between 5-10 grams of Moringa per day, this directly ties into how many capsules we would take per day. If our capsules are 500mg, we would need to take between 10-20 capsules per day. If our capsules were 1000mg (1g), we would need to take between 5-10 capsules per day. The amount of Moringa present in your specific brand of capsules will directly influence how many capsules you should take per day.

Conclusion

In Summary, if you’re new to Moringa, we recommend starting with a small dose. While the majority of people experience significant benefits from Moringa, everyone is unique. It’s essential to introduce new foods gradually into your diet.

Begin with a single gram, either added to your lunch or dinner daily or mixed into a smoothie. Stick to this amount for about a week, allowing your body to adjust to this new addition to your diet.

Over the next month or two, you can gradually increase the amount of Moringa you consume. At Morning Gardens, we typically use about 1-2 teaspoons of Moringa per day, equivalent to roughly 5-10 grams. This quantity suits us well, providing the benefits of Moringa’s antioxidants, nutrients, and vitamins without requiring significant dietary changes.

While we recommend these amounts when asked about daily Moringa dosage, it’s important to take your time in finding the right amount for you. Consult with your doctor, increase doses gradually, and pay attention to your body’s response.

Researchers have found that Moringa contains thiocarbamates, which can help decrease arterial blood pressure. It also contains a great deal of potassium, which has also been linked to a reduction in high blood pressure. In other words, adding Moringa to your diet can absolutely have a positive effect on managing and decreasing blood pressure in those with hypertension.

That’s a brief summary. It’s absolutely not the be all end all. Moringa can fight hypertension in a number of different ways, even outside of its thiocarbamate qualities. Let’s talk about blood pressure, how Moringa can lower blood pressure, and how much you should take to get the most of its nutritive benefits.

The 6 Best Moringa Powders In 2024

A Quick Overview Of High Blood Pressure

Blood pressure is probably one of the health markers that gets checked most often within the United States. Your doctor checks it. Your dentist checks it. Even your local pharmacy probably has a machine so you can check it. This is for good reason: one-third of the United States population suffers from high blood pressure, and millions of them don’t even know it.

High blood pressure is one of the leading causes of heart disease. It can damage and narrow your arteries, increasing the risk of stroke. It forces your heart to work faster, which can increase the risk of heart disease. High blood pressure can even damage your kidneys, bones, memory, and eyes.

In 2014, high blood pressure was either the primary cause or a contributing cause in the deaths of more than 400,000 Americans. High blood pressure is absolutely capable of killing a person.

Managing your blood pressure often requires a number of lifestyle and diet changes, and while it’s tempting to focus on one single cure, lowering your BP should be a holistic effort. Science has shown, though, that adding Moringa to your diet can absolutely help lower your blood pressure more.

How Can Moringa Decrease High Blood Pressure?

We know that Moringa can help manage blood pressure, and can absolutely reduce it drastically. How does it do that?

The answer is: In many ways.

Moringa contains something called thiocarbamates. Thiocarbamates are fungicides: they’re used to inhibit and kill fungus, which is why Moringa is so great as an anti-fungal. Fun fact: as far as we know, Moringa is currently the only naturally-occurring source of thiocarbamates. One of the other functions of thiocarbamates, though, is that it can lower blood pressure.

Moringa is also a treasure trove of antioxidants. One of those antioxidants is called quercetin, which is a powerful blood pressure-lowering agent. Studies have shown that quercetin can decrease both systolic and diastolic blood pressure in patients with high blood pressure.

Moringa is also extremely high in potassium. Potassium decreases the effects of sodium and reduces tension in the walls of blood vessels, which in turn helps to regulate and lower blood pressure. Gram-for-gram, Moringa has three times more potassium than bananas do.

All of that potassium works to reduce your BP, but it’s not the only mineral in Moringa that helps. Calcium and magnesium, two other minerals found in Moringa, also work to help blood vessels relax, thereby lowering blood pressure.

A 2-teaspoon serving of Moringa powder will give you 132 mg of potassium, 200 mg of calcium, and 37 mg of magnesium. In other words, as soon you sprinkle Moringa on lunch or in a smoothie, not only have you eaten a substantial percent of your recommended daily value for those minerals, you’re also working to lower your blood pressure.

And then there are the other elements in Moringa, like methylparaben (also used as an anti-fungal) or beta-sitosterol (which can reduce cholesterol). The same study that found that thiocarbamates in Moringa likely lowered blood pressure also discovered that methylparaben and beta-sitosterol also worked to reduce BP, too.

The antioxidants in Moringa help reduce blood pressure. So do the thiocarbamates, the calcium, potassium, magnesium. All of these properties work together to ensure that you’re better able to manage your blood pressure and avoid hypertension.

How Much Moringa Should I Consume Daily If I have High Blood Pressure?

If you’re new to Moringa and would like to use it to help lower your blood pressure, we always recommend talking to your doctor first, especially if you’re currently taking blood pressure medication. After that, we’d suggest starting with half a teaspoon a day. After 3-4 days, you can increase the amount to 1 teaspoon. As your body adjusts to a new type of food, you can then start gradually increasing the amount of Moringa you take over the course of a month or two until you’ve reached 10-15 grams.

For a detailed summary about how much Moringa should you consume daily, please feel free to check out our article on this exact topic (but is not focused on people who have high blood pressure): How Much Moringa Should I Take Each Day?

Should I Take Moringa With Blood Pressure Medication?

Moringa lowers your blood pressure. It can lower it significantly, which is why millions around the world take it. But when you combine Moringa with blood pressure medication, there’s a chance your BP may lower too much, and that can be dangerous as well.

We’re not saying don’t take it at all if you’re already on blood pressure meds. But first, consult with your doctor before consuming Moringa while you are on medication.

Conclusion

A holistic approach to health is always the best approach. There’s no magic bullet. Diet, exercise, and mental health all have a huge effect on a person’s physical health. But there’s very little doubt that adding Moringa to your diet can help improve your health. It can absolutely help lower your blood pressure. Try it. Even a few teaspoons can start you on the path towards changing your life. If you are however, on blood pressure or any other type of medication, we advise you consult with your doctor first before incorporating it in your diet.

When Will I See Key Growth Stages in My Moringa Plant?

Moringa stands out as one of the fastest-growing plants, with its seedling stage being the most time-consuming, often taking a month or two to surpass the 1-foot milestone. Even the seeds themselves can take 1 or 2 weeks to fully germinate.

Around the 2-foot mark, typically reached within 3-4 months, Moringa seedlings exhibit remarkable growth, especially for a fast-paced plant. Following this point, the upward trajectory accelerates, with an average monthly growth of 1-2 feet in warm climates with sandy loam soil and proper watering. In 8-10 months, a Moringa tree is likely to reach 10-12 feet or between 3-4 meters. By the end of the first year, it may stretch to a height of 12-15 feet.

However, if harvesting leaves is your intention, it’s advisable not to let the Moringa tree grow too tall. As it surpasses certain heights, pruning becomes more challenging. Trimming leaves before they reach that point is recommended.

For those considering Moringa trees for shade, windbreak, or similar purposes, a fully-grown Moringa tree can reach an impressive 30 to 40 feet in height and approximately 2 feet in diameter at breast height.

If you let a Moringa tree be, it’ll shoot up to impressive heights in no time. So, how can you foster its growth for the fastest results?

How to Maximize Growing Conditions

Moringa trees flourish in Zones 8-11, thriving in warm climates that seldom experience freezing temperatures, even during winters. It’s no surprise given Moringa’s origin in northern India, where temperatures rarely drop below 40 degrees F even in the coldest months.

Living in a warm environment is already a plus for your Moringa, as it thrives in higher temperatures. But what other steps can you take to ensure your Moringa trees are not just healthy but also growing at an impressive pace?

Step One: Make Sure to Give Your Moringa a Good Chance of Germinating

When it comes to germinating Moringa seeds, we’ve found that soaking them and allowing them to germinate indoors is the most effective method.

Here’s a helpful tip: for optimal results, consider planting your Moringa seeds in early spring, especially if you plan to start them in pots before transplanting. Ensure you wait until the threat of frost has passed.

Initiate the germination process at this time, and your trees will be well-prepared to harness the summer heat for their upcoming growth spurts.

To kickstart the process, soak your Moringa seeds in water for 24 hours.

After the soaking period, gently place them on a paper towel, taking care not to handle them roughly or apply excessive pressure while drying.

Now, transfer the seeds to a Ziploc bag. Store the bag in a dark location, such as the interior of a closet, maintaining a warm temperature, ideally no cooler than 70 degrees F.

Most Moringa seeds will germinate within 3-7 days, though occasionally it might take up to a week. Regularly check on your seeds. Since Moringa shoots are delicate, excessive growth in the bag may lead to breakage. As soon as you observe germination, promptly remove the seeds.

Step Two: Use Sandy Loam Soil

Moringa, known for its hardiness, can withstand extreme heat, endure drought, and even thrive in less-than-ideal soil conditions. However, it has a preference for loam soil, and if you provide it with this, you’ll witness faster growth.

Sandy loam, composed of silt, sand, and clay, offers the ideal mix. Clay provides a stable base for Moringa roots, sand ensures proper drainage, and silt allows for a harmonious blend of clay and sand.

When preparing your Moringa container, fill it two-thirds with sandy loam soil. Various containers like plant pots, paper cups, and mugs are suitable, but make sure they are at least 6 inches tall, preferably taller.

Considering Moringa roots grow deeply, a shallow container might stunt the tree’s growth, even if you plan to transplant it later.

Use your finger to create a hole about an inch deep and one to two inches wide, placing your Moringa seed in this space.

Crucial tip: as your Moringa seeds germinate, expect to see two shoots, not one. One shoot will display tiny leaves or frills at the end and will eventually become the trunk, while the other will develop into the roots.

Plant your Moringa seed in the soil root-side down, lightly covering it afterward. This step ensures optimal conditions for robust Moringa growth.

Step Three: Give it Sun

Regardless of whether your Moringa tree is indoors or outdoors, make sure it gets direct sunlight.

For indoor cultivation, position your Moringa near a west- or south-facing window to maximize sun exposure. Keep those blinds wide open whenever possible.

If cultivating Moringa in an outdoor setting, choose a location that receives abundant sunlight. Ensure that larger trees or buildings don’t cast shadows, and prioritize sun exposure, particularly during the afternoons and evenings. Remember, a sun-soaked Moringa is a happy Moringa!

Step Four: Water Your Tree More Frequently When It’s Young

While Moringa’s resilience against drought is a plus, the fast-draining nature of sandy loam soil demands attentive irrigation.

During the initial months, focus on maintaining consistently moist soil. In the first month, water your Moringa daily, enough to dampen the soil without waterlogging it. If water accumulates and doesn’t drain within 5-10 seconds, you’ve watered too much; adjust accordingly.

As your tree reaches around a foot in height, reduce the watering amount. Ensure the soil remains damp but not excessively wet. Daily watering is still recommended, but occasional lapses won’t harm—simply resume the routine the next day.

Around the time your Moringa hits 2-3 feet in height and its trunk starts to harden, consider transplanting it outside if that’s your plan. This stage, typically in month 2, is optimal for transplantation while the trunk is still supple.

From month three onward, gradually decrease watering to twice a week, or less if you experience sufficient rainfall. By month four, your Moringa tree, standing at least 3-4 feet tall, with a hardened trunk, will be well on its way to self-sufficiency.

Height Checkpoints for Moringa Trees: Monitoring Growth Success

It’s crucial to keep tabs on your tree’s height at each stage to ensure you’re on the right path.

Moringa tree height should ideally reach around 2 feet at 4 months, 12 feet by the end of the first year, and exceed 20 feet by the second year.

If your Moringa tree isn’t hitting these growth milestones, double-check its sunlight exposure and nutritional intake to ensure it’s thriving as expected.

Moringa Tree Growth Rate

Given the target heights of 2 feet at 4 months, 12 feet by a year, and over 20 feet by year 2, a rough estimate suggests a monthly growth rate of approximately 9.2 inches without any trimming.

Consider this a general guideline to gauge your Moringa tree’s development. However, it’s worth noting that regular trimming is a good practice – we always trim ours.

Conclusion

In summary, a Moringa tree at the 4-month mark is already quite resilient and can thrive on available rainfall, growing at its own pace.

However, by offering the right care, water, sunlight, and soil during its seedling stage, you set the stage for optimal growth conditions. This careful attention ensures that your Moringa tree not only survives but continues to flourish rapidly into adulthood.

If you’ve done a few quick Google searches about Moringa, you might have seen conflicting information about how much of it is edible.

There are some articles that claim that every part of the Moringa tree, from its leaves to its roots, is safe to eat.

There are others that insist you should only eat the leaves or drumsticks, and avoid everything else. When we first started researching Moringa years ago, we ran into this exact same situation.

So we did an awful lot of research, all for the purposes of answering this single question below.

Can you eat every part of the Moringa Tree?

Historically, humans have eaten every part of the Moringa tree, either for food or as medicine. However, while some parts of the tree are absolutely safe for consumption (leaves, drumsticks, seed oil), other parts of the tree should only be consumed in very limited quantities and/or only after careful preparation (roots, bark, flowers).

That’s the basic overview. Let’s take a step-by-step look at every part of the Moringa tree and discuss what you should or shouldn’t eat.

Moringa Leaves and Drumsticks: A Nutritious Addition to Any Meal

Scientists and researchers have been studying Moringa leaves for decades. Humans have been eating both the leaves and drumsticks for thousands of years.

Every piece of research and experiential evidence we have says that both Moringa leaves and drumsticks are entirely safe in commonly-used servings.

Moringa leaves can be used fresh, dried, or in powders. They can be taken in teas, cooked into recipes, or added as a garnish atop any dish. You can eat Moringa leaves directly from the branch, or you can crush and powder them to add to meals for the rest of the year.

We recommend sticking to 5-10 grams of Moringa powder or 5-15 grams of Moringa leaves daily, but all in all, Moringa leaves are entirely safe to consume.

The same is true of drumsticks. Moringa drumsticks are a bit less commonly eaten, but you can absolutely add them to most meals.

They can be sliced, diced, and added to soups and curries. You can eat them fresh, cooked, or pickled. We recommend an individual serving size of 1-2 drumsticks daily.

Regardless of how you choose to add leaves or drumsticks to your diet, both are safe, nutritious, and wildly beneficial. Is the same true of the rest of the tree, however?

Moringa Flowers Edible

Moringa flowers are often likened to mushrooms in terms of taste, with a comparable spongy texture and a familiar aftertaste. However, expecting an exact mushroom flavor might lead to surprise, as they have distinct characteristics.

While Moringa leaves boast a slightly higher nutritional content, the flowers are no slouch either. Packed with essential vitamins, minerals, protein, carbohydrates, and even more dietary fiber than Moringa leaves, they also share the anti-inflammatory properties found in the leaves.

Moringa flowers offer versatility in culinary applications. They can be boiled to make a medicinal tea, known for its anti-inflammatory benefits and use in addressing UTIs. Alternatively, frying them in oil makes for a flavorful addition to salads. In Ayurvedic practices, they are employed to support breastfeeding mothers and enhance milk supply.

However, there are important considerations. Moringa flowers possess contraceptive properties, potentially inducing uterine contractions in large quantities, leading to a risk of miscarriage during pregnancy. The exact quantities that pose a risk are unclear, making it advisable for pregnant or conception-seeking individuals to avoid Moringa flowers.

Additionally, it is crucial to cook Moringa flowers before consumption. Whether frying them in oil or boiling in water, avoiding raw consumption is recommended.

A third consideration is portion size. Moringa flowers are potent laxatives, so it’s wise to start with a small portion to avoid potential stomach cramps and excessive trips to the restroom.

Moringa Seed Oil: A Healthy Alternative to Vegetable Oil

Moringa seed oil, an unexpected gem that we didn’t know existed for years, has become a staple in our household. Derived from the seeds, this versatile oil goes beyond culinary use, finding its place in hair masks, moisturizers, and DIY perfumes.

While Moringa oil is an excellent alternative to vegetable, canola, or olive oil in cooking, it offers a slightly sweeter taste without overpowering the flavor of savory dishes. Rich in antioxidants and nutrients found in Moringa seeds, it enhances the nutritional profile of your culinary creations.

What’s more, making Moringa oil at home is a feasible task, even without an oil press. For those interested in the DIY approach, check out our article on making Moringa oil.

While we wouldn’t suggest chugging Moringa oil like water, incorporating it into your cooking is entirely safe. In summary, Moringa seed oil is a delectable part of the Moringa tree that you can confidently include in your diet.

Moringa Seeds: Edible, But Use in Moderation!

Immature Moringa seeds are indeed edible, but it’s recommended to consume them in moderation, treating them like pills—perhaps one or two a day.

There are various ways to enjoy eating Moringa seeds:

Fry them in a bit of oil, and they’ll puff up like popcorn kernels. Add them to salads, soups, or meat and vegetable dishes.

Boil them for a solo snack or incorporate them into your meals.

Use them to make Moringa oil.

Initially tasting vaguely sweet, Moringa seeds leave a bitter aftertaste. The taste becomes easier to get used to over time, but resist the temptation to consume them like nuts or sunflower seeds. While they offer ample vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants, be cautious—they also act as a potent laxative.

Consuming Moringa seeds in moderation is key. Start with a small portion, such as a single seed or half, especially if you have a sensitive stomach. Gradually increase your intake as you feel comfortable, but avoid eating them by the handful to prevent stomach cramps and frequent restroom visits.

While various parts of the Moringa tree can be safely consumed in moderation, there are two parts that are not recommended for consumption.

Moringa Root: Can you Eat Moringa Stems?

Moringa roots have a long history of medicinal use, known for treating ulcers, inflammation, and as a cardiac stimulant. They possess anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, and anti-bacterial properties, acting as diuretics and having pain-killing properties. Despite their nutritional content with vitamins, alkaloids, and minerals like calcium, magnesium, and sodium, Moringa roots contain toxic chemicals and alkaloids, including morphine, which can be harmful in large quantities.

Some adverse effects of consuming Moringa roots include nausea, dizziness, nerve paralysis, and the potential to induce uterine contractions, making them historically used as a contraceptive and capable of causing miscarriage in pregnant women. However, the lack of sufficient research as of April 2019 prevents a clear determination of safe consumption levels.

Due to the potential risks, it is not recommended to consume Moringa roots. There are other parts of the Moringa tree that are safe for consumption, and it’s advisable to avoid the roots until more conclusive research becomes available.

Moringa Bark: Can you Eat The Moringa Trunk?

Moringa bark, particularly root bark, has a historical use in traditional medicine for treating inflammation, urinary tract infections (UTIs), and ulcers. Research, including a study on UTI treatment, suggests the effectiveness of Moringa bark, surpassing modern medical treatments in certain cases. The study utilized a specific decoction, indicating safety for at least three weeks with no reported adverse effects.

However, Moringa bark is toxic in larger quantities, containing alkaloids that can lead to adverse effects ranging from nausea to paralysis and even death. Similar to Moringa roots and flowers, the bark can induce uterine contractions, posing a risk of miscarriage in pregnant women. Insufficient research on Moringa bark prevents a definitive understanding of safe quantities, considering various factors.

Due to the lack of conclusive research, it is strongly recommended to avoid Moringa bark entirely to mitigate potential risks.

Conclusion

Moringa is a highly nutritious and healthy food product, with its leaves, drumsticks, and seeds being beneficial additions to meals. However, caution is advised with Moringa flowers during pregnancy due to potential dangers.

Interested in growing your own Moringa tree? You may know the average height is 16-24 feet, but without pruning, it can reach up to 40 feet, posing challenges for leaf harvesting. So, how do you effectively prune a Moringa tree?

Harvest the leaves, then trim the tree down to 3 feet. If branches extend below this line, prune them at a consistent height.

Of course, there’s a little more information that you’ll need to know about pruning than just the above, including the why, when, and how. Let’s explore these aspects to ensure you prune your Moringa tree correctly.

If you’re planting a Moringa tree during the winter season, check out our guide for growing Moringa in cold climates:

Why Should I Prune My Moringa Tree?

When embarking on tree planting, it’s important to know the eventual height of the Moringa tree. Much like the disparity between a modest crabapple and the commanding oak, where one reaches a modest 12 feet and the other will take over the entire yard.

At Morning Gardens, our Moringa tree has already claimed our entire yard; it feels like just yesterday we planted those Moringa seeds! This takeover aligns perfectly with our preferences, offering an uninterrupted leaf supply for either immediate consumption or drying.

However, during our initial years, we came to the realization that Moringa trees thrive with regular pruning. Despite diligently harvesting leaves at winter’s onset, we initially overlooked this essential practice. Lessons learned through the seasons.

So what happened?

As spring unfolded, fresh shoots emerged from our Moringa tree once again. The predicament surfaced when these shoots soared to six, seven, and even eight feet, rendering them practically out of reach by summer. When you don’t prune your Moringa trees, it’ll keep growing taller into a towering, slender figure.

We’ve come to understand the pivotal role of regular pruning for Moringa trees, and, funny enough, it has become one of my husband’s favored outdoor activities (just kidding).

Without intervention, the tree’s height surpasses convenient harvest levels, and its slender structure fails to offer substantial shade. The pruning ritual, however, not only stimulates new shoots but also ensures a lush, bushy appearance. Observing a flourishing Moringa tree with a thick leaf canopy signifies diligent annual pruning by its caretakers.

This practice not only enhances the tree’s vitality but also prevents it from reaching impractical heights that require a ladder for harvesting.

Best Time to Prune a Moringa Tree

The ideal time to prune your Moringa tree depends on your hardiness zone. As a general guideline, wait until your tree becomes too tall to prune easily or right before the first winter frost, whichever comes first.

Understanding the timing aspect makes learning how to prune a Moringa tree much simpler. Moringa trees sprout in mid-spring and can surpass human height by mid-summer. If your tree grows too tall for convenient leaf harvesting, it’s time to start pruning. Allowing the tree to grow unchecked might result in heights of 12-16 feet even in the first year, making later trimming challenging.

If your Moringa tree hasn’t grown significantly, you can continue its growth through autumn before pruning. Be vigilant about weather forecasts, as a sudden frost could harm unprepared trees. While it’s possible to keep Moringa trees alive in winter (check our post on growing Moringa in cold climates), it’s advisable to prune your tree at this stage.

Regular pruning is key to managing excessive height, encouraging bushier growth, improving quality, fostering more flowers, ensuring faster growth, and yielding abundant seeds and leaves. Embrace regular pruning for a thriving Moringa plant with superior quality and productivity!

How to Prune Your Moringa Tree

Pruning your Moringa trees is a breeze, and here’s your simple guide.

Since Moringa trees are slender, all you need are:

a trusty pair of pruning shears (we recommend these on Amazon).

A spacious basket or blanket to keep those leaves off the ground.

Pruning branches with pruning shears.

The pruning process:

Start your pruning adventure from the top. The upper branches are generally thin, and you might find snapping them off at their bases where they meet the trunk is quite doable, even without shears.

If needed, use your shears to tidy up, cutting each branch at its base.

For routine upkeep, concentrate on branches exceeding 18 inches. While you can chop off entire branches, we suggest a subtler approach—cutting them in half. Trimming the ends of individual branches fosters growth while keeping the length in check. This results in a fuller, bushier tree that generously provides leaves and shade, growing outward rather than skyward.

Pruning for winter:

Now, if you’re pruning for winter or ahead of frost, a more extensive trim is in order. While snapping off individual branches is beneficial, especially for ease of harvesting, you’ll need to execute a more comprehensive cut at the trunk. Measure up approximately 3 feet from the base and use your shears to make the cut. If branches sprout below the 3-foot mark, trim them about 2-3 inches above this line.

And there you have it!

Morning Gardens is based in Southwest Texas, where the affordable cost of living has allowed us to cultivate a substantial amount of land. Our property is dedicated to vibrant vegetable and fruit gardens, alongside flourishing Moringa trees.

Yet, recognizing that not everyone has the luxury of yard space as more and more people are moving to the cities and living in apartments where outdoor space is often limited or non-existent. This shift has ignited the popularity of succulents, providing a charming solution that’s both space-efficient and beautiful for indoor decoration.

However, for those who want to grow Moringa trees for its health benefits, an important question arises: Can the naturally tall Moringa tree be grown indoors and how do you do it?

Can You Grow Moringa Indoors?

Growing Moringa indoors is entirely possible. To ensure success, regular pruning is key to maintaining a manageable size. You need to be considerate in choosing a spacious pot that accommodates the roots comfortably, and have the right placement near a south- or west-facing window is important for the tree’s sunlight needs. With thoughtful planning and attentive care, your Moringa tree can undoubtedly flourish within the confines of your indoor space!

For further insights on cultivating Moringa indoors, detailed information is provided below.

Differences Between Outdoor and Indoor Moringa Trees

The main distinction between an outdoor-grown tree and an indoor one lies in size.

Moringa trees exhibit rapid growth, reaching an impressive 1-2 feet per month. Without pruning, they can easily soar to towering heights of 30-40 feet. Therefore regular pruning becomes instrumental, maintaining a more manageable height of 4-6 feet.

Pruning not only controls height but also stimulates fresh growth. Unchecked, a Moringa tree tends to grow its leaves, flowers, and drumsticks at the top, making harvesting challenging. Consistent pruning ensures a bushy and easily harvestable Moringa plant.

Indoor cultivation means you’ll have more control over the tree’s overall health. While pests remain a concern, the controlled indoor environment diminishes the likelihood of nibbling. In addition, temperature regulation enables year-round growth, even during winter.

Windows and light exposure play crucial roles. To prevent bending, especially in limited light conditions, monitor your Moringa saplings closely. If leaning occurs, place a yardstick or straight stick, securely tied to the tree, to maintain a straight growth.

How to Prepare Your Indoor Space for a Moringa Tree

Let’s start with an important step: assessing your windows.

Moringa trees are adaptable in diverse conditions, thriving in both dry and wet environments, responding well to pruning, and flourishing in low-nutrient soils. However, there’s one indispensable factor they can’t do without – proper sunlight.

For indoor Moringa cultivation, where you place your tree is key. The best locations include windows facing west or south, ensuring maximum exposure to sunlight. Given the sun’s varying position due to the Earth’s rotation, southern and western windows receive the most sunlight during the day.

Pay attention to the light patterns in the afternoon and select a window with ample sunlight for your Moringa’s new home.

Clear a space next to the chosen window, ideally measuring at least 5×5 feet. This generous area allows your Moringa tree to thrive and provides enough room for easy leaf cleanup.

If space constraints limit you to less than a 5×5 area, rest assured that your Moringa can still flourish. However, diligent pruning may be necessary in such cases.

A Checklist Before You Plant Your Moringa Seeds

Congratulations on choosing the perfect bright spot by the window for your new indoor companion, and for clearing a dedicated space. To ensure your Moringa tree thrives indoors, there are a few essential steps we need to cover!

First and foremost, select a large enough pot for growing Moringa in pots. We recommend choosing a pot ranging from 40 to 60 liters. Choosing a pot within this range ensures enough room for your Moringa’s roots to flourish while maintaining an indoor-friendly size.

Avoiding a pot that’s too small is important, as it could result in a stunted tree, even if you plan to transplant it later into a larger container. The 40-60 liter range will give your Moringa roots enough room to grow, while keeping the tree indoor-sized.

Next, maintain an indoor temperature of at least 70 degrees Fahrenheit (around 21 degrees celsius). While you don’t need to turn your home into a sauna, it’s worth noting that Moringa trees thrive in warmer temperatures, given their origin in northern India. Aim for a temperature range of 70-75 degrees (21 to 24 degrees in celsius)– warm enough to keep your tree happy without turning your living space uncomfortably hot.

Next, let’s talk about soil. Soil type is not as important in this scenario. Ideally, sandy loam soil with good drainage is fantastic, but if not easily available, don’t worry. Moringa trees are resilient to various soils, and your pot’s built-in drainage will compensate. Standard potting soil is more than sufficient for a thriving indoor Moringa.

With your space set up, let’s embark on the journey of growing your Moringa indoors!

Moringa Seeds

Moringa seeds mark the initial step in your exciting journey of growing Moringa trees indoors.

Witnessing the growth of a Moringa tree within the confines of your home is not only enjoyable but also one of nature’s splendid gifts! To ensure the cultivation of healthy Moringa plants evolving into beautiful indoor trees, there are some tips and tricks concerning Moringa seeds.

While every Moringa Oleifera gardener may share different methods for seed germination, we find that soaking the seeds in rainwater for a few days before planting gives us the best results.

This practice fosters leaf growth and ensures the growth of robust Moringa plants, providing us with an advantage when we decide to grow Moringa trees indoors.

Soak your seeds in rainwater for a couple of days, allowing them to plump up, and then plant them in the soil of your pot for further growth. Although Moringa is a relatively drought-tolerant plant, this initial soaking, a little unconventional, has significantly helped our success with germination, resulting in the cultivation of the most nutrient-enriched Moringa!

Watering

First: avoid overwatering. While it’s challenging to harm a mature Moringa tree indoors, excessive watering can lead to rot. The appropriate water quantity depends mainly with age, following a general guideline:

Seeds to 2 months: Water small amounts daily, with one cup of water typically sufficient. Ensure the soil is moistened but not saturated.

2-4 months: Reduce watering to every other day, slightly increasing the water volume to 1.5 to 2 cups. Dampen the soil without allowing water to accumulate.

4-6 months: Decrease watering frequency to twice a week, maintaining a similar approach: enough to moisten, not to flood.

6 months and older: Water similarly once a week, ensuring the soil is adequately dampened without excess.

Pruning

Next, to successfully grow your Moringa indoors, semi-regular pruning is important.

Moringa trees thrive on pruning, resulting in bushier and fuller branches with each session. While pruning every week isn’t necessary, especially in the initial months, it becomes importance once your Moringa tree reaches approximately 75% of your desired height. For instance, if aiming for a five-foot-tall tree, initiate pruning when it reaches about 44 inches. This strategic approach ensures the right growth and shape for your indoor Moringa.

Begin by pruning the terminal bud, the highest point of your tree. Trim approximately 10-12 centimeters (4-5 inches) off the top. Don’t worry if you take off a bit more; the tree will regenerate quickly.

Move on to the secondary and tertiary branches. Secondary branches are those directly connected to the trunk, while tertiary branches extend from the secondary ones. Identify any secondary branches exceeding 20 centimeters (8 inches) and trim them in half. Apply the same method to tertiary branches.

After this initial pruning, you’ll start to see the growth of new secondary and tertiary branches within a few weeks. Allow them to grow until your tree reaches around 80% to 85% of your desired height. Then, do another round of pruning.

Regular pruning prevents your Moringa tree from growing excessively tall, maintaining a manageable and pleasing size indoors.
