What is Moringa and Why is it Good for Your Hair?

Moringa, often referred to as the drumstick tree, has been a well-kept secret for promoting healthy hair growth in regions like India, Pakistan, and other parts of Asia for centuries. Native to India, this tree thrives in humid subtropical climates. The Moringa plant, celebrated for its rich nutrient composition, including vitamins, minerals, and protein, has found its way into the diets of various cultures. In this article, we delve into the myriad Moringa Hair Benefits, offering insights on how to harness them fully.

Cool fact: Did you know? In a 2014 study, researchers discovered that Moringa leaf extract, was as effective as minoxidil in promoting hair growth in rats over 30 days. Not only did Moringa induce remarkable hair growth, but it did so without any side effects!

Six Hair Benefits that Moringa Has

1. Vitamin A

For many years we’ve known the effects of Vitamin A on hair. The reason that Vitamin A is so good for hair is it helps to strengthen hair and promote its growth. Stimulating cell growth near the scalp increases the growth of someone’s hair exponentially. This is good for us because according to NatureClaim, 100g of Moringa contains nearly 151% of the Daily Value of Vitamin A. Vitamin A is also good for skin and eyesight, preventing wrinkles and blindness. It also boosts immunity and promotes bone growth. Finally, Vitamin A promotes the production of Sebum. Sebum aids the scalp by creating an oily layer that helps keep the hair healthy. Cool Fact: The sebum on the scalp can be measured with a Sebutape. Check out this medical paper published by the National Library of Medicine for more about Sebum and Sebutape.

Cool Fact: The sebum on the scalp can be measured with a Sebutape.

Note: While vitamin A is beneficial, too much of it can be toxic. Stick to the daily recommendation to avoid any side effects.

The recommended daily allowance for adults is 900 micrograms. The upper limit for adults is 3,000 micrograms per day. Too much Vitamin A can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, and blurred vision. It can also lead to liver damage or osteoporosis if taken over a long period of time.

2. Vitamin B

A key benefit of Moringa is its ability to boost the production of red blood cells. Scalp nourishment is the simple solution to improve hair’s health and look. Blood carries nutrients and oxygen to the scalp which directly feeds the hair follicles. With more red blood cells, a greater influx of these vital nutrients can expedite hair cell renewal, and hence, a quicker cell turnover. It’s this increased turnover that can lead to faster hair growth – making the abundance of Vitamin B in Moringa an essential ally in the quest for vibrant, healthy hair.

3. Vitamin C

Moringa doesn’t just match the Vitamin C levels in common fruits; it surpasses them. In fact, it boasts more than 8 times more vitamin C than a small orange. But what does this mean for your hair? Within our bodies, free radicals—unstable molecules created during metabolism—pose a risk to our cells, causing oxidative stress which extends to our hair cells. Antioxidants from sources like Vitamin C-rich Moringa come to the rescue by neutralizing these dangerous molecules, thereby safeguarding cellular health. When we consume Moringa, we harness an extraordinary amount of Vitamin C, which empowers us to combat the free radicals that threaten to impede hair growth. This antioxidant action positions Moringa as a superhero in promoting stronger, healthier hair growth.

4. Vitamin E

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant that helps protect the body from the harmful effects of free radicals, which can lead to cell damage and aging. For hair, Vitamin E’s antioxidant ability means it can support the scalp by fighting off damaging free radicals from environmental aggressors like UV rays and pollution. This action helps maintain healthy hair follicle function and encourages optimal hair growth.

Moreover, Vitamin E is known for its role in blood circulation. Better blood flow equals a more efficient delivery of nutrients to your scalp, nurturing your hair from the root and promoting stronger, healthier growth.

Moringa oleifera doesn’t just offer a modest contribution to your Vitamin E needs—it comes packed with it. The oil extracted from Moringa seeds is rich in tocopherols, compounds that make up Vitamin E.

5. Iron

Moringa has a ton of iron, allowing it to promote hair growth. This is good because many people are deficient in iron. The main hair benefit of iron is that it helps hair stay true to its natural color, shine, and volume. It also strengthens your hair follicles to prevent baldness and reduces the risk of dandruff. In the same way that Vitamin B helps red blood cells – iron does the same. Iron works by increasing oxygen levels within the cells to create healthier red blood cells that in return carry more nutrients to different parts of the body. One of these parts is the scalp! A key Moringa hair benefit for iron is mostly on the other side of the coin. Since deficiency of iron is so high (which can lead to anemia) Moringa helps keep your levels up. You can also learn how Anemia has been shown to cause hair loss.

6. Omega 3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fats that play a crucial role in the body’s cell structure and are also pivotal for healthy hair growth. Moringa seeds are an excellent plant-based source of Omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3s contribute to scalp health by their anti-inflammatory properties that can alleviate scalp irritation and dandruff, fostering a better environment for hair growth.

Omega-3s help regulate oil production and hydration, keeping hair and scalp moisturized and preventing dry, flaky scalp and dull hair. These fatty acids nourish hair follicles, support hair thickening, and can reduce the rate of hair loss.

DIY Hair Serum Recipe Made With Moringa

If you happen to search for “Moringa + hair,” prepare to be amazed by jaw-dropping videos showcasing the transformative effects of Moringa hair masks and serums on boosting hair growth and repairing damaged strands. The secret lies in Moringa oil, a potent elixir rich in antioxidants and amino acids that work harmoniously to stimulate hair growth.

Luxurious and occlusive, Moringa oil is a beloved addition to hair care formulas for its silky texture. The oil’s behenyl acid content delivers profound moisture, locking in hydration without leaving a greasy touch.

Moringa oil becomes your hair’s ally in several ways. Firstly, its antioxidant content tackles free radicals at the root of hair damage, providing a robust defense. The oil is a remarkable source of essential amino acids such as arginine, cystine, cysteine, lysine, and methionine—all contributing to the encouragement of healthy hair growth.

Moreover, Moringa oil is packed with vital vitamins and minerals, including iron, B-complex, and zinc. Deficiencies in iron and zinc have long been associated with hair loss and damage. Adequate consumption of these nutrients can nourish your hair, kickstart growth, and repair the damage caused by life’s challenges, environmental factors, and dietary shortcomings.

Moringa Hair Care Routine

There are 3 ways you can use Moringa for your hair.

1. Ingesting Moringa

The leaves of Moringa tree are used in a variety of ways. They can be cooked, dried, and powdered as a spice, or made into tea. Ingesting the Moringa tree is one of the fun parts – as its flavor is well renowned. It can be used as a vegetable in Asian, Indian, and South Pacific dishes, and some are often used in soups. Moringa is also a little bit thicker and is commonly found in raw sauces such as tamarind, mango chutney, and yogurt. I personally put it in my smoothies in the morning!

2. Apply it on the skin

Rub Moringa oil on the scalp for a natural hair care solution. Moringa oil is a natural, organic hair oil care product that blends well with coconut oil.

3. Make a body butter recipe with Moringa

There are a ton of great body butter recipes out there, but here’s one simple enough for beginners:

1/2 cup of shea butter

1/2 cup of avocado butter

1/4 cup of Moringa oil

1/4 cup of almond oil

1/8 cup (about 5 teaspoons) of tapioca starch

10-20 drops of your favorite essential oil

Combine all ingredients except for the essential oils in a cooking pot and heat on medium-low until melted, stirring constantly. Once melted, remove from heat and let sit at room temperature for at least 15 minutes, or until slightly cooled. Then place it in the refrigerator for an hour. By this point, the mixture should be thick, but not hard.

Add your essential oils and then use a hand mixer to combine until the mixture is appropriately fluffy. Then let sit in the refrigerator once more for 10-15 minutes to let it set. Place your butter in jars and keep the lid closed tightly.

Moringa oil is quite affordable to purchase, and numerous reliable sources offer it. However, there’s undeniably a unique satisfaction in making your own oil.

If you’re someone who enjoys do-it-yourself (DIY) projects, it’s time to gear up and get ready because we’re about to embark on making Moringa oil!

How to Make Moringa Oil

To make Moringa oil, start by de-shelling the seeds and quickly extract the seed oil using an oil press. Allow the oil to rest for a few days, then carefully decant it into a bottle.

Learning how to produce Moringa oil and actually doing it is an enjoyable activity. To this day, it remains one of my favorite activities.

For more details on crafting your own oil and a comprehensive breakdown of each step, continue reading below!

Our complete one-stop-shop guide, Moringa 101 can be found in the article below:

How To Make Moringa Oil Cold-Pressed (DIY)

Utilizing an oil press significantly simplifies the process of making any type of oil. However, it’s important to acknowledge the drawbacks of these presses.

Firstly, they come with a considerable price tag; many models range from $200 to $500. If you’re interested in producing both Moringa oil and milk, investing in one is highly recommended. My personal favorite, Happybuy’s Stainless Extractor, offers versatility, allowing extraction from nuts, seeds, coconuts, and beans.

Yet, if your sole focus is Moringa oil, a $200+ machine might exceed your budget.

Moreover, while oil presses streamline extraction, they tend to yield less oil compared to manual methods. Most cold presses extract around 70% of the oil from seeds, which is commendable but falls short of the nearly 100% achievable through manual techniques.

Each approach has its merits and drawbacks to consider.

How To Make Malunggay Oil (Moringa Oil)

These instructions cover both methods for making Moringa oil: with and without an oil press. However, each method starts with the same initial step which is listed below.

Occasionally, Moringa is referred to as Malunggay. There’s no distinction between the two; Malunggay is simply the term used for Moringa in the Philippines. Consider this a heads-up in case you encounter this alternate name online!

Step 1: De-Shell the Seeds

This step assumes you’ve already extracted the seeds from the Moringa drumsticks. If not, simply halve the drumstick with a knife and carefully remove the seeds.

De-shelling the seeds is crucial in learning how to make Moringa oil.

There are various methods for de-shelling, but the easiest is by hand. Pinch the Moringa seed between two fingers and use a fingernail on your other hand to pry off the shell. It may take a few attempts, but Moringa shells typically come off easily.

While manual de-shelling is straightforward, it can strain the wrists after a while, so I wouldn’t recommend it. Instead, consider using a nutcracker. I personally use a Bradshaw nutcracker, which cost me less than $3. Simply pinch the seed between the nutcracker to crack it lightly, then remove the shell. It’s a ten-second process.

Keep in mind, the longer you leave the seeds without shells, the darker your Moringa seed oil will be.

Once cracked, use the seeds promptly.

How to Extract Oil from Moringa Seeds

Step 2: Extracting the Oil

If you have an oil press, extracting oil becomes a straightforward process.

Begin by turning on the machine. Even most cold press extractors require minimal heat to fully extract all of the Moringa seed oil, so allow the oil extractor to warm up for 5-10 minutes.

Once warmed up, you can initiate the extraction process. Your oil extractor will have a funnel where the Moringa seeds are placed. Slowly pour the seeds into the funnel, using your fingertip to guide them if necessary. Within a minute or two, the Moringa oil will start dripping out of the extractor into a container.

As the oil is extracted, the seed cake (what remains of the seeds) will also emerge from the extractor.

I typically collect the seed cake to use as fertilizer, but it can also be utilized for water purification. Stay tuned for an upcoming article on using Moringa as a water purifying agent!

Depending on the size of your machine and the quantity of Moringa seeds used, the duration of the process can vary significantly, ranging from five minutes to over an hour. However, the most challenging aspect of this step is the waiting period; the oil extractor will handle all the work for you.

It’s important to note that the oil-to-seed ratio is not a perfect 1:1. Moringa oil accounts for approximately 37% of the seeds, and the cold press will only extract about 70% of that. This translates to a little over one-fourth of the total volume. In simpler terms, if you process 1 pound of Moringa seeds, you’ll end up with about a quarter pound of oil.

Manual Moringa Oil Extraction

If you don’t have an oil extractor, the process will take a bit longer, but it’s still surprisingly simple.

Begin by pouring your Moringa seeds into a skillet or frying pan. If you have a large quantity of seeds, pour enough to form a single layer.

Turn your stove to medium heat and roast the Moringa seeds until their insides begin to brown. It’s important to note that the outer shells of the seeds will remain white. On my stove, this typically takes around 15 minutes, but I recommend periodically cutting open a seed to check for doneness.

While the seeds are roasting, fill a pot with water and place it on another burner. Keep the heat on low-medium while waiting for the seeds to finish roasting. Once done, transfer the seeds to the pot.

Turn the heat up to medium or medium-high until the water starts to boil. Within a few minutes of boiling, you’ll notice Moringa oil starting to seep out of the seeds and rise to the surface. Maintain the water at a gentle boil for approximately 20-25 minutes, adjusting the time based on the quantity of seeds in the pot.

After 25 minutes, all of the Moringa seed oil should have risen to the surface of the water.

Using a spoon, gently skim the oil off the top of the water and transfer it to a separate container. Allow it to cool.

Regardless of which method you’ve followed, your oil may still contain a small amount of water. This is why the next step is crucial.

Step 3: Let the Oil Rest

This step is often overlooked, yet it’s absolutely crucial unless you intend to use your oil immediately.

After the initial extraction of your Moringa oil, it will still contain water molecules and residual seed particles. This is normal. However, if you don’t allow the oil to rest for a few days, these water molecules can spoil the oil.

Learn from my mistakes! Take your container of oil, place it in a cool spot, and let it rest for three days. During this time, the water will evaporate, and any remaining seed particles will settle. As a result, you’ll be left with a beautiful, golden oil ready to be decanted and used for cooking.

Step 4: Decant the Oil

Your oil is now ready, and all that remains is to transfer it to its final container.

The choice of oil bottle is flexible. Personally, I prefer Aozita’s bottle set for its charming appearance and affordability, but feel free to select whichever option suits your preferences. (Though, I’ve noticed that darker bottles tend to preserve Moringa oil’s quality a bit longer.)

To decant the oil, pour it slowly from its current container into its new home. Avoid excessive agitation, as this may disturb any remaining seed residue, resulting in a slightly cloudy appearance (though the taste and nutritional value will remain unaffected).

For those aiming for the clearest oil possible, filtering is an option. However, note that this step is entirely optional.

Step 5: Use It

And with that, you’ve completed the process!

Skin concerns often lead to insecurities for many individuals. Pimples, acne, dark spots – the list goes on. Whether they’re visible or not, these issues can significantly impact our confidence and self-esteem. It’s entirely normal to turn to skincare products to combat these problems and address various skin concerns.

Finding the perfect product tailored to your skin type can be quite a challenge. If you haven’t yet discovered the wonders of Moringa Oleifera and its remarkable health benefits, it could be the ideal skincare solution for you and help with skin whitening and skin problems such as acne and more!

How Does Moringa Oil Help With Skin Whitening, Sun Spots and Dark Spots?

Moringa oil stands out as a potent solution for minimizing hyperpigmentation and dark spots, aiding in achieving an even skin tone and promoting skin whitening. Unlike other oil treatments, it absorbs quickly without leaving a greasy residue, making it perfect for consistent, long-term use.

For those with oily skin, Moringa is a must-have. It effectively combats excess oil buildup, often caused by stress and environmental pollutants, with its abundance of antioxidants known for their skin-rejuvenating properties and skin whitening effects.

These qualities make Moringa our family’s preferred skin-massaging treatment, offering a coveted blend of improved skin health, and proven healing properties. My daughter and I even enjoy indulging in Moringa masks occasionally, although they may not peel off as smoothly as some other products on the market.

Moringa for Skin Problems: Acne and Dark Spots

Acne breakouts often stem from excessive sebaceous gland production, exacerbated when combined with dead skin cells and clogged pores.

Moringa has several benefits for the skin such as:

The potential to decrease skin oil production, thereby naturally mitigating the buildup that leads to pore congestion.

The robust antioxidant properties of Moringa assist in hormone balancing, mitigating the adverse effects of stress—a known trigger for increased oil production and acne.

Boosts in collagen production and vitamin C.

Rich in phytonutrients and promotes increased blood flow to scar tissue.

Boosts Vitamin C And Collagen Production

The abundance of vitamin C in Moringa is instrumental in promoting collagen production, effectively combating wrinkles, saggy skin, and fine lines in areas where they’re unwelcome.

Additionally, for dry skin, Moringa leaves offer a rich source of vitamin B, serving as a natural humectant to restore lost moisture both on the skin’s surface and deep within.

Moringa proves to be a reliable ally in aiding old wounds and scars, even those battle marks!

If you’ve ever dealt with the aftermath of a stubborn pimple, you understand the frustration of the lingering scar or blemish that remains just as unsightly as the original breakout.

But fear not—Moringa Oil may hold the solution!

Rich in phytonutrients, Moringa seed oil promotes increased blood flow to scar tissue, accelerating the healing process.

While it also offers benefits against abrasions, burn marks, rashes, and insect bites, its prowess shines brightest in skincare applications.

Moringa Oil Skin Benefits

The “Miraculous” Moringa oil has numerous science-backed skin benefits, rendering it a potent remedy for various acute skin issues. Packed with anti-aging, anti-bacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties, Moringa oil serves as an effective solution for acne breakouts, aids in collagen production, supports wound healing, and promotes hair growth.

Free radicals have detrimental effects on the skin, but the wealth of nutrients found in Moringa leaf extract can help neutralize these unstable molecules.

To delve deeper into its skin-repairing prowess, let’s explore further details.(Source)

Moringa Oil For Skin Lightening of Dark Spots

The substantial vitamin C content in Moringa oil contributes to lightening skin tone and diminishing dark spots. Moreover, its wealth of antioxidants offers promising anti-aging effects, safeguarding the skin against bacterial threats and oxidative damage.

These attributes render Moringa seed oil highly effective against a multitude of skin conditions. (Source)

Beyond skincare, Moringa oil serves a multitude of purposes. For instance, my husband applies a small amount of topical oil to his knees post-gym session to alleviate swelling.

Thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties, Moringa oil provides relief from pain and helps alleviate chronic skin inflammation.

How To Use Moringa Powder For Skin Whitening

Making your own DIY Moringa Face Mask couldn’t be easier:

Gather 1 1/2 tbsp of Moringa powder.

1 tbsp of honey.

2 tbsp of yogurt or milk.

Combine these ingredients until you achieve a smooth paste consistency. Apply the mask to your face using a brush or your fingertips, and leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes before rinsing with lukewarm water.

Alternatively, some prefer to use lemon juice and rose water instead of yogurt or milk for added benefits and a pleasant fragrance. Personally, I find rose water to be a delightful addition to the mask.

While yogurt provides excellent benefits, feel free to experiment with different ingredients to suit your preferences. Ensure the mixture has a smooth consistency for optimal application. If it feels clumpy, gradually add water until you achieve the desired texture.

Once you’ve applied the mask, gently dry your face with a clean cloth. This skincare routine has become a daily ritual for my family, and I invite you to join us in experiencing its benefits!

Is Moringa Oil Good For Sensitive Skin?

Its non-greasy formula upon topical application makes it an excellent choice for individuals with sensitive skin, providing optimal skincare without any oily residue.

Amidst the myriad of skincare solutions available, Moringa emerges as a natural remedy renowned for its skin repair and nourishing properties. Even if Moringa powder isn’t your preference, incorporating Moringa oil into your skincare routine by adding it to shampoos, lip balms, and other skincare products can yield remarkable benefits.

Moringa is quite a versatile product and has a number of benefits. It is also called the drumstick tree or a miracle tree due to the numerous benefits it has for our health and wellness. Moringa can nourish the skin and hair.

This article will look at the possible benefits of using the Moringa Oleifera plant for curing and preventing hair loss. The Moringa plant is revered for its therapeutic and nutritional properties, and many people have used Moringa for hair growth.

If you are seriously considering using Moringa to boost hair growth, then I suggest reading our new article on the best 6 Moringa powders in 2024 that we recommend at Morning Gardens!

Moringa Key Benefits for Hair Growth

Moringa, also referred to as the drumstick tree or miracle tree, is native to parts of Africa and Asia. Its leaves, pods, seeds, and roots are rich in essential nutrients, making it a valuable resource in traditional medicine and contemporary wellness practices. The key components that lead to Moringa for hair growth are its nutritional potency in terms of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and amino acids.

Below are four key benefits of Moringa that may help with hair growth:

1. It Provides Minerals

Essential minerals like iron, zinc, and calcium found in Moringa are integral for promoting healthy hair growth. Iron deficiency, for example, is a common cause of hair loss, and Moringa provides a natural source of this vital mineral.

2. It Provides Vitamins

Moringa is a rich source of vitamins, including A, C, and E. These vitamins play a crucial role in maintaining the health of the scalp and hair follicles. Vitamin A, for instance, supports the production of sebum, an oily substance that moisturizes the scalp. Vitamin C promotes collagen production, vital for hair strength, while Vitamin E is known for its antioxidant properties, protecting hair cells from oxidative stress.

3. It Provides Amino Acids

Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins, and since hair is primarily composed of a protein called keratin, a sufficient intake of amino acids is crucial for maintaining healthy hair. Moringa contains all nine essential amino acids, making it a complete protein source.

4. It is a Source of Antioxidants

Moringa contains powerful antioxidants such as quercetin, chlorogenic acid, and beta-carotene. These antioxidants help neutralize free radicals, protecting the scalp and hair follicles from damage caused by oxidative stress. By reducing oxidative stress, Moringa contributes to a healthier environment for hair growth.

How to Use Moringa for Hair Growth

Incorporating Moringa for hair loss into a hair care routine can be done in various ways.

1. Using Moringa Powder in Your Diet or as a Hair Mask

Adding Moringa powder to your diet or using it as a hair mask can provide a nutritional boost. You can mix Moringa powder with water or carrier oil to create a paste for topical application.

There are many different recipes to mix Moringa powder with and make a paste. This YouTube video below is one simple example that you can use and got great reviews!

The Moringa powder that I personally use and love is Kuli Kuli Moringa Powder.

2. Using Moringa Oil

Extracted from Moringa seeds, this oil is rich in vitamins and antioxidants. Massaging Moringa oil into the scalp can moisturize and nourish the hair follicles, potentially promoting hair growth.

The best Moringa oil that I recommend and use is True Moringa Oil that is 100% pure and cold pressed.

3. Employing Moringa Supplements

As a convenient option, Moringa supplements are available in various forms, such as capsules or tablets. These supplements offer a concentrated dose of Moringa’s nutrients that can help with hair growth.

Precautions and Considerations

While Moringa shows promise in promoting hair health, it’s essential to approach its use with some precautions.

1. Dosage

Excessive intake of any supplement can have adverse effects. It’s crucial to follow recommended dosage guidelines and consult with a healthcare professional before adding Moringa supplements to your routine.

2. Allergies

Individuals with known allergies to Moringa or related plants should be cautious. Allergic reactions to Moringa are rare but can occur.

3. Medication Interactions

If you are on medications or have pre-existing medical conditions, consult with a healthcare provider before incorporating Moringa into your routine, as it may interact with certain medications.

Hair Loss Due to Nutritional Deficiencies

Nutritional deficiencies can contribute significantly to hair loss. Moringa’s nutrient density makes it an excellent supplement to address these deficiencies. Incorporating Moringa for hair loss into your diet can provide a natural boost of essential vitamins and minerals, promoting overall health and potentially reducing the risk of hair loss associated with nutritional imbalances.

Balancing Hormones and Stress

Hormonal fluctuations and chronic stress are known contributors to hair loss. Moringa has been studied for its adaptogenic properties, which means it may help the body adapt to stress and regulate hormonal balance. The plant contains compounds like isothiocyanates that have demonstrated anti-stress and anti-inflammatory effects in scientific studies.

Moreover, Moringa may influence hormones related to hair growth, such as Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is involved in certain types of hair loss. Research suggests that Moringa’s anti-androgenic properties may help modulate DHT levels, potentially preventing hair follicles from reducing in size.

Improving Blood Circulation

Proper blood circulation is essential for delivering nutrients to the hair follicles. Moringa has been associated with opening effects, which may help widen blood vessels and improve blood flow. Enhanced blood circulation to the scalp can ensure that hair follicles receive an adequate supply of nutrients, promoting healthier hair growth.

Conclusion

Moringa has great promise as a natural remedy for addressing hair loss due to its rich nutritional profile and potential therapeutic properties. More research is needed to understand its mechanisms and effectiveness fully. Meanwhile, you can take Moringa powder as a supplement to stop hair loss (check out our article on the best 6 Moringa powders in 2024 here). Incorporating Moringa as part of a holistic approach to hair care will offer benefits beyond just promoting hair growth. Before using Moringa for hair loss and other benefits, it would be advisable to consult with a healthcare professional before making any significant changes to your diet or lifestyle. Using the power of nature, Moringa stands as a symbol of hope for those looking at natural solutions to the very common condition of hair loss.

Moringa is a vitamin & nutrient powerhouse, and most of the people who consume it do so because those nutrients keep our bodies healthy. That’s fantastic! But what sometimes takes people a while to realize is this: all those vitamins and nutrients in Moringa are also great for keeping your face, skin, and hair nourished, too. Here’s a list of 8 of our favorite Moringa beauty tutorials. All of these videos give step-by-step instructions on how to use Moringa to make face and hair masks, serums, and scrubs to leave your skin glowing and your hair growing.

The first time I saw this video’s thumbnail, my jaw dropped down to my feet. While beautyklove’s gorgeous hair is the result of a lot of time and care, there’s no doubt that this growth serum plays a small part, too.

beautyklove uses a combination of Moringa, argan oil, vitamin E oil, and virgin coconut oil to create this serum. The final product is massaged into your scalp 2-3 times a week, where it works to repair damaged hair follicles, prevent hair loss, encourage hair growth, and prevent breakage.

This hair serum is extremely easy to make, and even easier to use: all you need are the Moringa leaves, the oils, a blender, and a strainer. Take 10 minutes out of your day to try this DIY; your hair will thank you for it!

Natural sisters

Natural sisters is probably my favorite Moringa/beauty-related channel, mostly because they have so many videos. It doesn’t matter whether you’re looking for DIY moringa tutorials for your hair, body, or face; this channel probably has the DIY you’re looking for. That said, this is my favorite one of their videos.

Idee Francis from Natural sisters uses a mixture of Moringa paste, baby oil, Moringa oil, sugar, coconut milk, rice powder, and rose water to create an exfoliating, moisturizing body scrub full of antioxidants. The end result looks weird and feels weirder, but it works. The first time I tried this scrub, it left my skin smoother than it had felt in at least a decade. The second time I tried this scrub, a random person in Walmart actually complimented me.

Give it a try. It’ll change your entire skin care routine.

3: DIY Moringa Face Mask for Acne

BeenieTV

I’ve only been watching BeenieTV’s videos for a few weeks, but she’s quickly become one of my favorite channels for a couple of reasons. She’s not actually a beauty vlogger in the way that many of these are; her focus is more on self-love, spirituality, and growth. But she does also offer several health and beauty DIYs, and does it while also giving affirmations and encouragement.

BeenieTV uses Moringa, honey, water, and lemon to make a super simple, super quick face mask that nonetheless works to introduce a ton of antioxidants and nutrients into your skin. This particular mask takes literally three minutes to put together and only needs 10-minutes of wear, and still manages to leave your skin looking and feeling brighter.

Praise Onaturals

This hair mask by Praise Onaturals uses a 7:3 ratio of whipped shea butter and Moringa-infused oil mixed to create a creamy DIY mask that leaves your hair shiny, healthy, and ready to grow.

Praise uses Jamaican black castor oil, tea tree oil, Moringa oil, coconut oil, almond oil, and Moringa powder (you can see her exact process in this video here) to create an oil mixture that, when combined with shea butter, works to pump your hair and scalp full of the exact vitamins, nutrients, and antioxidants that work to strengthen hair and prevent hair loss.

This DIY is a little more ingredient-heavy than most of the others on our list, but it’s worth it; every ingredient listed is one that has a specific purpose. The completed product is also gorgeous, turning into a light, creamy whip that will feel as luxurious as it is healthy.

5: Anti-Acne Moringa Oil Face Serum

WhippedGreenGirl Angie

WhippedGreenGirl shares a lot of DIYs, but for obvious reasons, this is one of my favorites. Angie uses a few different oils to make this anti-acne serum: rosehip, pumpkin seed, tea tree, sandalwood, and Vitamin E. Unlike many of the other DIYs on this list, though, Angie uses Moringa oil, rather than Moringa powder, to make this serum.

This has a number of pros: Moringa is jammed full of antioxidants, and it’s so light that it works with all skin types, including those with acne-prone skin. Because making the oil is so labor-intensive, though, 100% Moringa oil tends to be more expensive than most other similar oils, so take that into account if you want to follow this DIY to the letter.

6: Moringa Leaf Powder Face Mask for Brighter Skin

Sukhi Mann

Sukhi Mann’s brightening face mask is deceptively simple: she uses a grand total of three ingredients. The combination of these ingredients, however–Moringa powder, honey, and almond milk– is a powerful one. Honey is a natural antibacterial and full of antioxidants, all of which work to fight the bacteria that cause breakouts. Almond milk is jam-packed with Vitamin E, which helps protect your skin from UV rays. And Moringa is basically a combination of all of the above: an antifungal, an antibacterial, and full of so many vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that it basically works to protect and heal your skin all on its own.

This mask creates a dark green paste that’s thick enough to provide full coverage but thin enough that it doesn’t leave you feeling like it’s permanently clogged your pores. By the time you’re done, you’re going to feel the difference.

7: DIY Moringa Lip Scrub

True Moringa is one of our favorite Moringa resources for a couple of reasons. Mostly this is because the quality of their goods is fantastic. It’s also partly because of their YouTube channel, though, which is full of tutorials, DIYs, and guides to using their Moringa products.

This DIY is extremely simple: its only two ingredients are Moringa oil and sugar. That’s really all it needs. The sugar exfoliates your skin, while the Moringa oil works to moisturize your lips and provide much-needed nutrients and antioxidants.

Try it for a couple of minutes each day. By the end of a week or two, you’ll absolutely see and feel a huge difference.

8: Moringa Cold Process Soap

Vibrant Soap

Technically, this soap-making recipe by Vibrant Soap isn’t exactly a Moringa beauty tutorial. However, it can be used for beauty, and it’s a tutorial, so I’m adding it and no one can argue with me!

Clyde at Vibrant Soap uses a combination of clays, oils, colors, and Moringa tea to create a beautiful, moisturizing cold process soap that looks nearly as good as it feels on your skin. He does speed a bit through the chemistry bit of it, so if you want a tutorial that walks you through choosing oils and clays you may want to explore some of his other videos first (or simply look up a tutorial online), but he also goes into enough detail that you can easily follow along.

Conclusion

There are a bunch of different ways to use Moringa oils and powders to help moisturize your face, skin, hair, and more. These videos only deal with a very small number of the possibilities, and we’ll soon start posting some of our own. But they’re a fantastic place to begin, and most of these are easy enough (and contain enough household ingredients) that you could probably throw them together in a handful of minutes. Give them a try; you will absolutely be pleased with what you find.

Moringa originates from various countries, yet its distinctive aroma remains consistent, regardless of its origin. The primary variation in the scent of Moringa lies in its form.

Let’s delve into the various forms of Moringa and their respective smells.

What Does Moringa Smell Like?

Moringa powder and leaves have a distinctly earthy smell, reminiscent of a blend between roasted nuts and acidic coffee. However, this fragrance of Moringa isn’t overpowering, particularly when compared to the added scents present in other forms such as Moringa oil and body wash.

Type of Moringa

There are two primary types of Moringa: Moringa Oleifera and Moringa Stenopetala.

While both varieties offer health benefits, Moringa Oleifera is the strain most commonly utilized and referenced.

In this article, our focus is specifically on products made with Moringa Oleifera, as it is more prevalent and widely available in the market compared to its counterpart.

Moringa Powder Smell (Light Scent)

Given that Moringa comes from the earth, it’s no surprise that Moringa powder has a distinct earthy aroma. Once Moringa leaves undergo the transformation into powder, their nutty essence and inherent minerals permeate, creating a robust acidic scent.

As Moringa powder is finely ground, it breaks down internal chemicals, allowing the flower’s undertones to emerge, creating a fresh fragrance.

In this form, the natural scents of Moringa are most pronounced, with no added fragrances to mask them, enabling us to fully appreciate the powder’s aroma.

Those with an affinity for the rich smell of black coffee, woody notes, nutty nuances, and other acidic-based aromas will find delight in the natural scent of Moringa powder. Given its widespread popularity in powdered form, encountering the scent of Moringa in this state is highly likely.

However, even if these scents aren’t typically your preference, rest assured that Moringa’s aroma isn’t strong enough to deter you from incorporating it into your diet.

Moringa Leaves Smell

While Moringa powder enjoys widespread popularity, Moringa leaves possess their own distinct aroma, which leans towards a greener scent profile.

Due to the absence of the grounding process, most of the internal nutrients within the leaves remain in their vibrant state, somewhat masking their fragrance. Though Moringa leaves still carry a hint of nuttiness, it’s notably subtler and may prove more challenging to guess once you’ve given it a sniff. (See More)

When taking in the aroma of Moringa leaves, you’re likely to detect hints of pesticides, other garden scents, or the overall essence of the Moringa tree itself before pinpointing the specific fragrance of the leaves.

Nevertheless, the fresh garden aroma stands as a notable advantage of Moringa leaves over the powdered form.

Moringa leaves, especially when still green, gives off one of the freshest scents found in the plant kingdom. Even today, the aroma of Moringa leaves evokes memories of a freshly watered garden for me.

Undoubtedly, the delightful scent of Moringa leaves is just one of the numerous benefits of growing Moringa at home, offering a unique experience compared to purchasing it from a store.

Moringa Shower Gel Smell

The first bucket has to deal with non-scent added, where the smell of Moringa can be radiant.

The Moringa shower gel ranks among the most sought-after products on the market today. However, when it comes to the aroma of these products, there are two distinct categories.

In the first category, we find products with no added scent, allowing the natural fragrance of Moringa to shine through radiantly.

On the other hand, the second category consists of products with added fragrances, where these scents may overshadow the distinctive aroma of Moringa.

Pure Moringa Shower Gel Smell

The smell lingering on your skin post-using a Moringa shower gel or Moringa body butter is truly unparalleled. Moringa Oleifera was crafted to infuse shower gels with delicate floral hints and other subtle undertones.

Stepping out of the shower, you’ll be greeted by vibrant notes of citrus and oranges.

I vividly recall a time when my husband remarked that I smelt like freshly peeled grapefruit straight from the garden after using the Moringa shower gel.

To be transparent, on one occasion, a friend who stayed over for the night utilized the body wash. As we spoke later over tea, she suggested that the Moringa shower gel smelt like olive oil.

While we respectfully disagree with this assessment (and we describe it as citrus-infused), it’s worth noting that a few others have shared similar observations!

Enhanced Moringa Shower Gel Smell

Sometimes, when purchasing a Moringa shower gel, you may encounter additional fragrances incorporated into the formula.

As mentioned earlier, the natural smell of Moringa isn’t potent enough to dominate over these added fragrances.

Vanilla is a common addition to such blends, often swiftly overpowering the Moringa scent. However, this doesn’t imply that the combination of these scents isn’t delightful.

Yet, it does seem counterintuitive to purchase a product marketed for its Moringa aroma if it doesn’t actually smell like Moringa!

What Does Moringa Oil Smell Like? (Strong Scent)

If you’re fond of the aroma of Moringa powder, you’re bound to be captivated by the smell of Moringa oil.

In essence, Moringa oil is the concentrated extract derived from Moringa. Through a cold-pressed extraction method, all the vital nutrients are preserved, while any non-essential components of the leaves are thrown out.

Moringa oil represents a more potent form of Moringa. With this increased potency comes a more robust smell.

Similar to previous descriptions, you’ll likely detect a nutty and woodsy scent. Unlike some oils infused with additional fragrances, Moringa oil maintains its natural essence, rich with various vitamins and natural remedies. While its scent may not be subtle, the healing properties of Moringa oil are undeniable. It’s renowned for its efficacy in addressing dry skin concerns and has demonstrated remarkable results in combating wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, fine lines, and dry scalp issues.

For those seeking an effective method to incorporate Moringa into their routine, Moringa oil often stands out as one of the finest options, blending seamlessly with various applications.

My personal favorite Moringa oil that I like to use for my skin and has really helped for my dry skin, especially during the winter season is the Moringa oil by True Moringa.

Does Moringa Smell Like Vanilla?

Moringa possesses a distinct earthy aroma that bears no resemblance to vanilla. Its scent is best described as a blend of roasted nuts and acidic coffee. If your Moringa product has a vanilla fragrance, it’s likely been infused with vanilla, masking the natural scent of Moringa.

I have a soft spot for body butter. While I often overlook lotions and various skincare products, body butter is an exception that I simply can’t resist. Is this a wise choice? Probably not. Should I allocate twenty minutes of my evening to moisturize diligently before bedtime? Absolutely. But do I? Admittedly, I often find myself drifting off to sleep twenty minutes earlier instead, without any regrets.

Yet, there’s something undeniably indulgent about body butter that I find irresistible. The sensation of slathering it on, massaging it into my skin, and spending the rest of the day feeling like a queen.

The issue lies in the fact that body butter, owing to its inherent richness, can occasionally feel too dense and oily for personal preference. So, if you love body butter but wish to avoid that heavy, unpleasant filmy on your skin, what’s the remedy?

In this article, we will list out 7 of our favorite Moringa oil body butter recipes!

If you want a deep dive into Moringa, check out our Moringa 101 post:

3/4 cup avocado butter

1/4 cup Moringa oil

1 tbsp tapioca starch

10 drops rosemary essential oil

10 drops frankincense essential oil

Begin by adding your avocado butter to a large mixing bowl. With a mixer or immersion blender, whip the butter for approximately 2 minutes at medium speed until it reaches a fluffy, cloud-like consistency.

Pour the Moringa oil into the bowl and continue mixing at medium speed until the oil and butter have fully combined. Next, add the tapioca starch and mix for an additional minute until all three ingredients are thoroughly incorporated, resulting in a fluffy and smooth mixture.

Now, it’s time to add your essential oils. Mix once more at low speed until all components are well combined, typically taking about 1-2 minutes.

Finally, scoop your freshly made body butter into your glass jar and seal it tightly when not in use. Enjoy the luxurious sensation it brings to your skin!

Transfer the softened shea butter to a mixing bowl. Using a mixer or immersion blender, whip the butter for approximately 2 minutes at medium speed until it becomes fluffy.

Next, add your Moringa and jojoba oil to the whipped shea butter, and continue mixing at medium speed until the oil and butter are fully combined. The mixture should maintain a fluffy and smooth texture.

Incorporate the tapioca starch into the mixture, continuing to mix in short bursts of 5 seconds until it is fully blended. Ensure that the texture remains fluffy throughout this process.

Now, it’s time to add your essential oils. Mix once more at low speed until all elements are thoroughly combined, typically taking about 1-2 minutes.

Scoop your freshly prepared body butter into your glass jar, and seal it tightly when not in use. Enjoy the nourishing sensation it brings to your skin!

Allow the shea/coconut mixture to cool on the counter until warm but not hot.

Add the Moringa oil and arrowroot starch to the shea and coconut mixture, and stir until fully incorporated.

Place the mixture in the refrigerator for about 40 minutes. Let it cool and solidify slightly; you’ll notice the mixture starting to appear slightly cloudy. Remove from the refrigerator before it hardens completely.

Add all three essential oils to the lotion and mix until fully incorporated. If you prefer whipped lotion, use a hand/stand mixer or immersion blender and whip for about 7-10 minutes until fluffy. If you don’t want whipped lotion, mix by hand for about 5 minutes or use a hand mixer for about 1-2 minutes.

After the cocoa butter has cooled, add the Moringa oil, starch, and both essential oils to the mixture. Use a hand or stand mixer to blend everything thoroughly for about 2 minutes until well combined.

Transfer the body butter mixture to the freezer for approximately 20 minutes or place it in the refrigerator for about 60 minutes. You want the lotion to begin solidifying slightly, but ensure it doesn’t harden completely.

Ingredients

3/4 cup Cocoa Butter

1/4 cup jojoba oil

1/8 cup Moringa oil

1 tbsp arrowroot starch

15 drops cardamom essential oil

10 drops clove essential oil

10 drops ginger essential oil

Begin by softening the cocoa butter. You can do this by heating it in short 10-second bursts in the microwave or by using a double boiler on low heat on the stovetop. Aim for a final consistency that is solid enough to clump together but soft enough to easily separate with a utensil.

Once softened, let the cocoa butter cool on the countertop for about 20-30 minutes until it’s cool enough to handle.

Add the Moringa oil, jojoba oil, and arrowroot starch to the cocoa butter. Mix everything together using a hand/stand mixer or by hand, ensuring thorough incorporation of the butter, oils, and starch.

Next, add the essential oils to the body butter and mix once more until all elements are combined. This will take about 20 seconds with a hand mixer or about 2 minutes if mixing by hand.

Finally, scoop your body butter into your glass jar and get ready to enjoy! Make sure to seal the jar tightly when not in use to preserve its freshness.
