<h2><strong>The Seven Step Technique To Make Moringa Powder</strong></h2>
<p data-start="244" data-end="464"><span style="font-size: 18pt;">If you’ve been growing Moringa trees for the past year, chances are they’ve already shot up taller than you. When you’re surrounded by a lush cascade of leaves, it’s the perfect time to <strong data-start="430" data-end="453">make Moringa powder</strong> at home.</span></p>
<p data-start="466" data-end="610"><span style="font-size: 18pt;">This guide will walk you through the whole process — from harvesting and drying to grinding and storing your own nutrient-rich Moringa powder.</span></p>
<h2> </h2>
<h2><span style="font-size: 36pt;">Quick Overview: How to Make Moringa Powder</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"><strong>To make Moringa powder, you will need to follow this process:</strong></span></p>
<ol>
<li><span style="font-size: 18pt;">Remove the branches and wash them.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: 18pt;">Dry the branches, either by shade-drying them, sun-drying them, oven-drying them, or by using a dehydrator. </span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: 18pt;">Strip the leaves from the branches and grind them into a powder. </span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: 18pt;">Sift the powder and store it!</span></li>
</ol>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">That&#8217;s the short answer. Let&#8217;s talk about <em>how</em> to do this, though. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">Making Moringa Powder is awesome, but if you were looking for just more information on how much Moringa you should take daily, you can check out this article we wrote here: </span></p>
<ul style="list-style-type: square;">
<li><a href="https://morningardens.com/blogs/morning-digest/how-much-moringa-should-i-take-each-day/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-size: 24px;">How Much Moringa Should I take Each Day?</span></a></li>
</ul>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><br /><span style="font-size: 24pt;">Step One: Harvesting the Branches</span></h3>

<p class="p1"><span style="font-size: 18pt;">There are two primary methods for harvesting Moringa tree branches.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span style="font-size: 18pt;">During the summer growth spurt, we opt for the pre-harvest method. A few days before winter sets in, we harvest the rest of the tree. </span></p>
<p class="p1"><strong><span style="font-size: 18pt;">Pre-Harvest Method</span></strong></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"></span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">We use the pre-harvest method for getting a small amount of the Moringa tree, perhaps for Moringa tea or gifting fresh leaves. Note that you need dried Moringa for making Moringa powder.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" class="wp-image-4628 aligncenter" style="font-size: 17px;" src="https://morningardens.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/moringa-1506196_1920-1.jpeg?w=1024" alt="" width="705" height="503" />Simply pick a branch, hold it right at the place where it meets the trunk, and snap it off.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"></span></p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><br /><strong>Ready-to-Harvest Method</strong></h4>

<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">This is the method we use when we know the frost is about to hit, and/or when we want to harvest all remaining prized Moringa at once.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">Grab your gardening shears, an ax, a saw, or any other cutting utensil fit for cutting down the Moringa tree. </span></p>
<p class="p1"><span style="font-size: 18pt;"><span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>Start cutting from about 1 meter or 3 feet high to maintain a bushier tree. If you accidentally cut too much, don&#8217;t worry; Moringa is resilient, and it will regrow. </span></p>
<p class="p1"><span style="font-size: 18pt;">Our best results come from leaving at least a meter of trunk. Wipe off dust or bugs from the leaves with a cloth.</span></p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><br /><span style="font-size: 24pt;">Step Two: Washing the Leaves</span></h3>

<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">Many people skip this step, and even in the most pristine growing conditions will still have some risk of bacterial or pathogenic infection, either from the soil or municipal water from growing the Moringa tree. </span></p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><br /><strong>Blanching</strong></h4>

<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">You&#8217;ll need:</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"></span></p>
<ul class="wp-block-list" style="list-style-type: square;">
<li><span style="font-size: 18pt;">A stove</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: 18pt;">A pot of water</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: 18pt;">A bowl of ice water</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: 18pt;">A strainer/sieve</span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">A lot of people avoid blanching because they&#8217;re worried that it&#8217;ll dramatically reduce the number of nutrients, antioxidants present, or essential amino acids in their fruits and veggies. Blanching is</span><strong><span style="font-size: 18pt;"> not going to destroy the nutrient profile or cause much nutrient breakdown, even of water-soluble nutrients. Blanching will not sacrifice health benefits.</span></strong></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">Here&#8217;s the process for blanching:</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"></span></p>
<ul class="ul1" style="list-style-type: square;">
<li class="li1"><span style="font-size: 18pt;">Boil water in a pot.</span></li>
<li class="li1"><span style="font-size: 18pt;">Prepare a bowl of ice water.</span></li>
<li class="li1"><span style="font-size: 18pt;">Immerse branches in boiling water for about 1 minute.</span></li>
<li class="li1"><span style="font-size: 18pt;">Using a strainer, transfer leaves to ice water.</span></li>
<li class="li1"><span style="font-size: 18pt;">Once cool, pat the leaves dry.</span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"></span></p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><br /><span style="font-size: 24pt;">Step Three: Drying the Leaves</span></h3>

<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">Several methods exists for drying Moringa leaves, each with its pros and cons. </span></p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><br />Shade-Drying the Leaves</h4>

<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">You will need:</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"></span></p>
<ul class="wp-block-list" style="list-style-type: square;">
<li><span style="font-size: 18pt;">Twine, yarn, or some other type of sturdy string</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: 18pt;">A dark, cool spot</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: 18pt;">Somewhere to hang the branches, like a crossbeam</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: 18pt;">Mosquito netting (optional)</span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">Take 3-5 branches, and tie them together by the stems.</span></p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-4631 aligncenter" src="https://morningardens.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/ben-oil_tree_leaves_marketed_1-1.jpeg?w=1024" alt="" width="526" height="409" /></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">Make sure that the branches are fully secured; you&#8217;ll be hanging the bundles upside down, be careful with the small sticks, if they fall, you&#8217;ll need to repeat the washing process. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">One at a time, tie each bundle to a horizontal beam. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">I typically knot a foot-long piece of jute twine around the stem several times, wrap the other end of the jute around a crossbeam, and then tie it again two or three times for good measure.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">If you are unable to individually tie several bundles up to dry upside down, you can also hang up a few yards of mosquito netting and lay the branches out in a single layer.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">Your Moringa leaves will take about 3-4 days to shade dry. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">Dry leaves will be brittle and papery to the touch.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"><strong>Shade drying will minimize nutrient breakdown by sun-drying.</strong></span></p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><br /><strong>How To Sun-Dry Moringa Leaves</strong></h4>

<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">You will need:</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"></span></p>
<ul class="wp-block-list" style="list-style-type: square;">
<li><span style="font-size: 18pt;">Twine, yarn, or some other type of sturdy string</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: 18pt;">A place to hang the leaves, such as a rail or a laundry line</span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">Take 3-5 branches (3 if the branches are very dense with leaves, 5 if they aren&#8217;t), and tie them together by the stems. Again, make sure that each branch bundle is secured together, and that none will slip off if hung upside down.</span></p>
<p><img decoding="async" class=" wp-image-5306 aligncenter" src="https://morningardens.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Sun-Drying-the-Moringa-Leaves-240x300.jpg" alt="Sun Drying the Moringa Leaves" width="349" height="444" /></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">One at a time, tie each bundle to a laundry line, or wherever else you&#8217;ve decided to hang the leaves. Make sure that each bundle is entirely secured.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">In warm, dry weather, it typically takes about 2 days to sun-dry leaves. Once they&#8217;re brittle and delicate to the touch, you can then remove them.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">Sun-drying typically results in the <strong>highest loss of nutrients due to direct sunlight</strong>, and you will only get good results if you sun-dry during periods of warm/hot and dry weather.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"></span></p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><br /><strong>How To Dry Moringa Leaves In The Oven</strong></h4>

<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">You will need:</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"></span></p>
<ul class="wp-block-list" style="list-style-type: square;">
<li><span style="font-size: 18pt;">An oven capable of maintaining a temperature below 200° F</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: 18pt;">A drying tray</span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">Preheat the oven to 150° F.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">Carefully place the trays inside the oven. Do not close the oven door; keep it propped open at least 3-5 inches.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">Moringa leaves typically take between 3-4 hours to dry in an oven.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">Lower the temperature 10 degrees every hour, and keep lowering it until you reach a temperature of 120°. Once the leaves are brittle and crumble easily, they can be removed.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"></span></p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="mce_62"><br /><strong>Dehydrating the Moringa Leaves with a Dehydrator</strong></h4>

<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">You will need:</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"></span></p>
<ul class="wp-block-list" style="list-style-type: square;">
<li><span style="font-size: 18pt;">A dehydrator</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: 18pt;">That&#8217;s about it</span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">Make sure to layer your leaves in a single layer, and make sure there&#8217;s enough space above the tray for air to circulate.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">The length of time to dehydrate will vary depending on your specific dehydrator, but you&#8217;ll probably find it pretty similar to the amount of time an oven would take. I normally find 3-4 hours to be the average.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"></span></p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><br /><span style="font-size: 24pt;">Step Four: Stripping the Leaves</span></h3>

<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">You will need:</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"></span></p>
<ul class="wp-block-list" style="list-style-type: square;">
<li><span style="font-size: 18pt;">A large bowl or bag in which to place your Moringa leaves</span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">Once dry, stripping leaves is easy. Pinch one end of the branch between two fingers and squeeze down. Most leaves should easily fall off. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">Place leaves in a bowl or bag.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">We&#8217;re nearing the final steps in our guide to making Moringa powder!</span></p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><br /><span style="font-size: 24pt;">Step Five: Grinding the leaves into Powder</span></h3>

<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">You will need:</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"></span></p>
<ul class="wp-block-list" style="list-style-type: square;">
<li><span style="font-size: 18pt;">Either a mortar &amp; pestle</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: 18pt;">Or a high-powered blender, such as a <a href="https://amzn.to/3RSTY4g" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Vitamix</a>, <a href="https://amzn.to/48UEIL1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ninja</a>, or <a href="https://amzn.to/422K5p9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Blendtec</a></span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">I personally have the <a href="https://amzn.to/48UEIL1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ninja</a> blender and use that to blend my Moringa leaves, and it works perfectly! </span></p>
<p><a href="https://amzn.to/48UEIL1" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-6403 aligncenter" src="https://morningardens.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Ninja-blender-1024x748.jpg" alt="" width="445" height="325" srcset="https://morningardens.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Ninja-blender-1024x748.jpg 1024w, https://morningardens.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Ninja-blender-300x219.jpg 300w, https://morningardens.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Ninja-blender-768x561.jpg 768w, https://morningardens.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Ninja-blender.jpg 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 445px) 100vw, 445px" /></a></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">Take your container of dried leaves and pour a few cupfuls into your blender. You&#8217;ll still get the best results if you don&#8217;t fill the blender past the halfway mark.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">Turn your blender on, making sure to use a high setting. Blend the leaves for about 10-20 seconds.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"></span></p>
<p><strong><span style="font-size: 18pt;">You can also use a mortar &amp; pestle. </span></strong></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">Grind the Moringa powder as much as you can, and repeat as necessary.</span></p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><br /><span style="font-size: 24pt;">Step Six: Strain the Moringa Powder</span></h3>

<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">You will need:</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"></span></p>
<ul class="wp-block-list" style="list-style-type: square;">
<li><span style="font-size: 18pt;">A strainer/sieve</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: 18pt;">A large bowl</span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">Straining enhances taste. Pour powder through the strainer into the bowl. Shake the sieve to dislodge anything stuck. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">This step ensures smoother powder and removes accidental twigs.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">That&#8217;s it. The last step is just to store it.</span></p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><br /><span style="font-size: 24pt;">Step Seven: Storing The Moringa Powder</span></h3>

<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">Unless you&#8217;ve only made enough Moringa powder to last you a day or two, you&#8217;ll probably want to store the rest of the Moringa leaf powder for future use. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">Good news: as long as you store Moringa powder in a cool, dry area, the powder will keep for up to a year, without losing any health benefits.</span></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-4632 aligncenter" src="https://morningardens.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/bottle-close-up-colors-92327-1.jpeg?w=1023" alt="" width="738" height="492" /></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;"></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">The emphasis here is on the &#8220;cool, dry area.&#8221; Store your Moringa in airtight containers, or a vacuum sealer.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">Mason jars work perfectly, but remember that not every Mason jar is made equal. <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Mason-Bundle-Jar-Opener-Regular/dp/B07G4ZLL5G/" rel="nofollow">These are my favorites</a>, but feel free to do your research! </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">Seal in those health benefits from your Moringa Oleifera (Miracle Tree or Drumstick Tree)! </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">If you’re not making your own, see my list of the <a href="https://morningardens.com/blogs/morning-digest/best-moringa-powders/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Best Moringa Powders You Can Buy.</a></span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Moringa oil is quite affordable to purchase, and numerous reliable sources offer it. However, there&#8217;s undeniably a unique satisfaction in making your own oil.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">If you&#8217;re someone who enjoys do-it-yourself (DIY) projects, it&#8217;s time to gear up and get ready because we&#8217;re about to embark on making Moringa oil!</span></p>
<h2><span style="font-size: 24pt;">How to Make Moringa Oil</span></h2>
<p><strong><span style="font-size: 14pt;">To make Moringa oil, start by de-shelling the seeds and quickly extract the seed oil using an oil press. Allow the oil to rest for a few days, then carefully decant it into a bottle.</span></strong></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Learning how to produce Moringa oil and actually doing it is an enjoyable activity. To this day, it remains one of my favorite activities.</span></p>
<p><strong><span style="font-size: 14pt;">For more details on crafting your own oil and a comprehensive breakdown of each step, continue reading below!</span></strong></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Our complete one-stop-shop guide, Moringa 101 can be found in the article below:</span></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><span style="font-size: 24pt;"><br />How To Make Moringa Oil Cold-Pressed (DIY)</span></h2>

<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Utilizing an oil press significantly simplifies the process of making any type of oil. However, it&#8217;s important to acknowledge the drawbacks of these presses.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Firstly, they come with a considerable price tag; many models range from $200 to $500. If you&#8217;re interested in producing both Moringa oil and milk, investing in one is highly recommended. My personal favorite, <strong><a href="https://amzn.to/3UEtsyz" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Happybuy&#8217;s Stainless Extractor</a>,</strong> offers versatility, allowing extraction from nuts, seeds, coconuts, and beans.</span></p>
<p><a href="https://amzn.to/3UEtsyz" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-6686 aligncenter" src="https://morningardens.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Oil-presser-1024x1024.jpg" alt="Moringa oil presser" width="460" height="460" srcset="https://morningardens.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Oil-presser-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https://morningardens.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Oil-presser-300x300.jpg 300w, https://morningardens.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Oil-presser-150x150.jpg 150w, https://morningardens.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Oil-presser-768x768.jpg 768w, https://morningardens.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Oil-presser.jpg 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px" /></a></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Yet, if your sole focus is Moringa oil, a $200+ machine might exceed your budget.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Moreover, while oil presses streamline extraction, they tend to yield less oil compared to manual methods. Most cold presses extract around 70% of the oil from seeds, which is commendable but falls short of the nearly 100% achievable through manual techniques.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Each approach has its merits and drawbacks to consider.</span></p>
<h4>How To Make Malunggay Oil (Moringa Oil)</h4>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>These instructions cover both methods for making Moringa oil: with and without an oil press. However, each method starts with the same initial step which is listed below. </strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Occasionally, Moringa is referred to as Malunggay. There&#8217;s no distinction between the two; Malunggay is simply the term used for Moringa in the Philippines. Consider this a heads-up in case you encounter this alternate name online!</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>Step 1: De-Shell the Seeds</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">This step assumes you&#8217;ve already extracted the seeds from the Moringa drumsticks. If not, simply halve the drumstick with a knife and carefully remove the seeds.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">De-shelling the seeds is crucial in learning how to make Moringa oil.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">There are various methods for de-shelling, but the easiest is by hand. Pinch the Moringa seed between two fingers and use a fingernail on your other hand to pry off the shell. It may take a few attempts, but Moringa shells typically come off easily.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">While manual de-shelling is straightforward, it can strain the wrists after a while, so I wouldn&#8217;t recommend it. Instead, consider using a nutcracker. I personally use a Bradshaw nutcracker, which cost me less than $3. Simply pinch the seed between the nutcracker to crack it lightly, then remove the shell. It&#8217;s a ten-second process.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Keep in mind, the longer you leave the seeds without shells, the darker your Moringa seed oil will be.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Once cracked, use the seeds promptly.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">

</span></p>
<h4 class="wp-block-heading">How to Extract Oil from Moringa Seeds</h4>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>Step 2: Extracting the Oil </strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">If you have an oil press, extracting oil becomes a straightforward process.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Begin by turning on the machine. Even most cold press extractors require minimal heat to fully extract all of the Moringa seed oil, so allow the oil extractor to warm up for 5-10 minutes.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Once warmed up, you can initiate the extraction process. Your oil extractor will have a funnel where the Moringa seeds are placed. Slowly pour the seeds into the funnel, using your fingertip to guide them if necessary. Within a minute or two, the Moringa oil will start dripping out of the extractor into a container.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">As the oil is extracted, the seed cake (what remains of the seeds) will also emerge from the extractor.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">I typically collect the seed cake to use as fertilizer, but it can also be utilized for water purification. Stay tuned for an upcoming article on using Moringa as a water purifying agent!</span></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class=" wp-image-5236 aligncenter" src="https://morningardens.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Oil-Press-Method-225x300.jpg" alt="Oil Press Method" width="305" height="408" /></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">

</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Depending on the size of your machine and the quantity of Moringa seeds used, the duration of the process can vary significantly, ranging from five minutes to over an hour. However, the most challenging aspect of this step is the waiting period; the oil extractor will handle all the work for you.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">It&#8217;s important to note that the oil-to-seed ratio is not a perfect 1:1. Moringa oil accounts for approximately 37% of the seeds, and the cold press will only extract about 70% of that. This translates to a little over one-fourth of the total volume. In simpler terms, if you process 1 pound of Moringa seeds, you&#8217;ll end up with about a quarter pound of oil</span>.</p>
<h3><span style="font-size: 24pt;">Manual Moringa Oil Extraction</span></h3>

<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">If you don&#8217;t have an oil extractor, the process will take a bit longer, but it&#8217;s still surprisingly simple.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Begin by pouring your Moringa seeds into a skillet or frying pan. If you have a large quantity of seeds, pour enough to form a single layer.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Turn your stove to medium heat and roast the Moringa seeds until their insides begin to brown. It&#8217;s important to note that the outer shells of the seeds will remain white. On my stove, this typically takes around 15 minutes, but I recommend periodically cutting open a seed to check for doneness.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">While the seeds are roasting, fill a pot with water and place it on another burner. Keep the heat on low-medium while waiting for the seeds to finish roasting. Once done, transfer the seeds to the pot.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Turn the heat up to medium or medium-high until the water starts to boil. Within a few minutes of boiling, you&#8217;ll notice Moringa oil starting to seep out of the seeds and rise to the surface. Maintain the water at a gentle boil for approximately 20-25 minutes, adjusting the time based on the quantity of seeds in the pot.</span></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class=" wp-image-5234 aligncenter" src="https://morningardens.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Step-2-Remove-the-Oil-200x300.jpg" alt="Step 2 Remove the Oil" width="269" height="460" /></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">

</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">After 25 minutes, all of the Moringa seed oil should have risen to the surface of the water. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Using a spoon, gently skim the oil off the top of the water and transfer it to a separate container. Allow it to cool.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>Regardless of which method you&#8217;ve followed, your oil may still contain a small amount of water. This is why the next step is crucial.</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>Step 3: Let the Oil Rest</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">

</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">This step is often overlooked, yet it&#8217;s absolutely crucial unless you intend to use your oil immediately.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">After the initial extraction of your Moringa oil, it will still contain water molecules and residual seed particles. This is normal. However, if you don&#8217;t allow the oil to rest for a few days, these water molecules can spoil the oil.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Learn from my mistakes! Take your container of oil, place it in a cool spot, and let it rest for three days. During this time, the water will evaporate, and any remaining seed particles will settle. As a result, you&#8217;ll be left with a beautiful, golden oil ready to be decanted and used for cooking.</span></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-5235" src="https://morningardens.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Step-3-Let-the-Oil-Rest-300x200.jpg" alt="Calendar to let the Moringa oil rest" width="521" height="347" srcset="https://morningardens.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Step-3-Let-the-Oil-Rest-300x200.jpg 300w, https://morningardens.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Step-3-Let-the-Oil-Rest-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://morningardens.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Step-3-Let-the-Oil-Rest-768x512.jpg 768w, https://morningardens.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Step-3-Let-the-Oil-Rest-1536x1025.jpg 1536w, https://morningardens.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Step-3-Let-the-Oil-Rest-2048x1366.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 521px) 100vw, 521px" /></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">

</span></p>

<p><br /><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>Step 4: Decant the Oil</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">

</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Your oil is now ready, and all that remains is to transfer it to its final container.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">The choice of oil bottle is flexible. Personally, I prefer <strong><a href="https://amzn.to/49cyMOa" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Aozita&#8217;s bottle</a></strong> set for its charming appearance and affordability, but feel free to select whichever option suits your preferences. (Though, I&#8217;ve noticed that darker bottles tend to preserve Moringa oil&#8217;s quality a bit longer.)</span></p>
<p><a href="https://amzn.to/49cyMOa" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-6687 aligncenter" src="https://morningardens.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/710mChJXqS._AC_SL1500_-1024x1005.jpg" alt="Oil dispenser" width="410" height="402" srcset="https://morningardens.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/710mChJXqS._AC_SL1500_-1024x1005.jpg 1024w, https://morningardens.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/710mChJXqS._AC_SL1500_-300x294.jpg 300w, https://morningardens.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/710mChJXqS._AC_SL1500_-768x754.jpg 768w, https://morningardens.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/710mChJXqS._AC_SL1500_.jpg 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 410px) 100vw, 410px" /></a></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">To decant the oil, pour it slowly from its current container into its new home. Avoid excessive agitation, as this may disturb any remaining seed residue, resulting in a slightly cloudy appearance (though the taste and nutritional value will remain unaffected).</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">For those aiming for the clearest oil possible, filtering is an option. However, note that this step is entirely optional.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>Step 5: Use It</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">

<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Moringa generally begins its harvest preparations during the fall season. In the northern hemisphere, the initial signs of ripening Moringa pods may become noticeable around August, with the later ones maturing in October. However, the prime harvest period typically unfolds in September.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Now, the question is: How can you determine when your Moringa seeds are ready for harvesting? And what is the best method for harvesting them?</span></p>
<p>If you are interested to learn more about growing Moringa in cold climates, check out the <a href="https://morningardens.com/blogs/morning-digest/can-you-grow-moringa-in-cold-climates/?swcfpc=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">article here.</a></p>
<h3><span style="font-size: 24pt;">How to Harvest Moringa Seeds and Pods</span></h3>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">

</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>The time to harvest Moringa seeds is when the pods have dried and turned brown. </strong><strong>The typical procedure for a Moringa seed harvest involves gently twisting the pods from the trees. Afterward, the pods are carefully split in half, and the seeds within both halves are scraped and harvested.</strong></span></p>
<h3><span style="font-size: 24pt;">How do I K</span><span style="font-size: 24pt;">now if My Moringa Seeds are Ready to Harvest?</span></h3>

<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>The easiest way to determine if your Moringa pods are ready for harvest is when they have become dry and turned brown.</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">

</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Initially, Moringa pods emerge as long, thin structures. In their early stage, when they resemble young and slender green beans, these pods are edible, but you&#8217;ll lose out on the seeds. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">

</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Over the next month or two, these pods will undergo growth and thickening, eventually bulging with dozens of seeds. Gradually, they transform into a lush green color, varying in thickness from as slim as a finger to as thick as a flute. They&#8217;ll look delicious and the pods can be eaten. <a href="https://www.rotinrice.com/drumstick-shrimp-curry/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">There are recipes like the Moringa drumstick curry from Roti n Rice that I love.</a> But if your goal is to harvest the seeds, resist the temptation and leave the pods on the tree. </span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">

</span></p>
<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-4521 aligncenter" src="https://morningardens.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/rsz_1img_7616.png?w=756" alt="A lush, green Moringa pod. <figcaption><span style="font-size: 18pt;"><br /><span style="font-size: 14pt;">The image above is a lush, green Moringa pod, and the seeds are not yet ready to harvest!</span></span></figcaption>
</figure>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">

</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Over the next few weeks, you&#8217;ll observe the Moringa pods gradually turning brown. Initially, they may display a nice mix of green and brown, and the urge to start plucking them from the tree may arise. However, it&#8217;s crucial to resist this temptation as they are not yet ready for harvest!</span></p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-4522" src="https://morningardens.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/rsz_img_7617.png?w=756" alt="Moringa pod not ready for harvesting" width="469" height="625" /></figure></div>

<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>Wait until the pods have transitioned into a pale, brown/tan color,</strong> and the husk appears dry. It&#8217;s worth observing if a few drumsticks naturally start to come apart, releasing a few seeds to the ground. Then, and only then, are the pods ready for harvest.</span></p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong><br /></strong><span style="font-size: 24pt;">How to Harvest the Moringa Pods From the Tree</span></h3>

<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">While some fruits and vegetables demand an extraordinary amount of effort to harvest (yes, artichokes, I&#8217;m looking at you), the process of removing Moringa pods from Moringa trees is almost as effortless as snapping off a branch. In fact, it&#8217;s so simple that gravity sometimes takes care of it on its own.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">While this simplicity makes harvesting pods straightforward, it can also result in a big mess if you&#8217;re not careful. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">

</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">To harvest the pods effectively, grab the pod by the top, approximately 1 inch below the stem. Note: Avoid gripping the middle or bottom of the pod, as doing so increases the chances of the pod snapping open and scattering seeds everywhere.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">If a pod is positioned too high for easy reach, attempt to gently bend the branch or trunk towards you until it comes low enough for you to grab the top of the pod.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">

</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Once you&#8217;ve grabbed the Moringa pod near the stem, gently twist it until it snaps off. The GIF below will illustrate how easily the pod should snap off.</span></p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-4524" src="https://morningardens.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/ezgif.com-gif-maker-2.gif?w=300" alt="snapping off a Moringa pod for harvesting" width="300" height="534" /></figure></div>

</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Extracting seeds from dry Moringa pods is just as uncomplicated as harvesting the pods from the tree. When Moringa seeds are ready for harvest, the pod should have turned brown, become dry, and easily split open. Occasionally, you might notice that some Moringa pods have started to split on their own.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">

</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Before you proceed, ensure you&#8217;re seated at a table or have a designated space to collect falling seeds. Crackling open Moringa pods often results in seeds scattering, so having a designated area to catch them prevents the need to bend over repeatedly.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 18pt;">

</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Once you&#8217;ve taken the pod off the tree, hold the end of the pod between your fingers, with the stem end often working best. Squeeze the pod firmly, and a crack in the seam should appear. Grasp both sides of the Moringa pod along the seam and gently pull it apart, being ready to catch any falling seeds!</span></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-4526" src="https://morningardens.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/ezgif.com-gif-maker-1.gif?w=300" alt="Seeds inside the Moringa pod" width="300" height="534" /></figure>

<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Once you&#8217;ve collected your Moringa seeds, store them in a cool, dry location until they&#8217;re ready to harvest in spring.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">

</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">And that&#8217;s really all there is to it!</span></p>
<h3><span style="font-size: 24pt;">Some Background About Moringa Seed Pods</span></h3>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Moringa seed pods are harvested directly from the Moringa tree, and inside, you&#8217;ll find numerous seeds that are edible, similar to peas.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Simply cut them open, extract the seeds, and you&#8217;re already halfway through the process! </span><span style="font-size: 14pt;">It&#8217;s important to note that these seeds need to be cooked first. However, once dried, they become edible!</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>A quick tip:</strong> Consuming an excessive amount of these seeds may have a laxative effect. It&#8217;s advisable to limit intake to one or two seeds per day.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">The seeds are rich in various essential vitamins, and after being dried and peeled, they can be ground to create excellent powders. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Globally, many people utilize these powders on their skin and body for relieving aches and pains, often combining them with Coconut Oil.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">And in various regions, it&#8217;s a common practice to find chopped Moringa Seed Pods added to different curries and soups, with smaller pods being preferred for such culinary uses.</span></p>
<h3><span style="font-size: 24pt;">Helpful Tips for Harvesting Moringa Leaves</span></h3>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Gathering Moringa leaves differs significantly from harvesting Moringa seed pods.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Moringa Oleifera stands out due to its unique vertical growth pattern, avoiding a dense, bushy appearance.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">However, a clever technique involves &#8220;tricking&#8221; the Moringa Oleifera tree into adopting a horizontal (bushy) growth, maximizing the chances of growing more Moringa leaves in the long run. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Assuming you&#8217;re familiar with planting Moringa seeds and may even have some Moringa seedlings, here&#8217;s how to go about it:</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>Contrary to common belief that only mature, flowering trees should be harvested for Moringa powder, the key is to start harvesting leaves when your Moringa Oleifera tree reaches around 70 centimeters in height! Trim the main branch (not the side branches) down to approximately 40 or 30 centimeters. Repeat this process until your Moringa Oleifera tree adopts a horizontal growth pattern instead of a vertical one.</strong></span></p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><span style="font-size: 24pt;">Conclusion</span></h3>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">In summary, harvesting Moringa involves a careful timeline and attention to various cues. The process begins in the fall, with pods ripening from August to October, reaching their prime in September. <strong>Knowing when to harvest seeds involves waiting for dry, brown pods (as indicated in the pictures above).</strong> Harvesting pods from the tree is a relatively simple task, <strong>but it requires patience and attention to the pod&#8217;s color and dryness.</strong> <strong>Extracting seeds from dry pods is straightforward, involving a careful process to avoid scattering.</strong> </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Harvesting Moringa leaves follows a different strategy, encouraging a bushy growth for maximizing higher number of leaves grown. Understanding these techniques ensures a successful Moringa harvest!</span></p>
